Re: Shop Quote: Plugs and Wires

You are right but he may just be scared to go under the hood and work on the car. I know thats how I felt when I first got my camaro. Then as I got jack by a mechanic shop I found great sites as this one to help and encourage me to work on my own car. Before I worked on my car I once went and got my belts changed amongst other regular maintenance stuff, and because my car was tweaked in a bad way I learned to work on my own car. Before it was like no way Im i ever going to be able to work on my car but now I will replace or repair what ever I have too with the toold available.

So that why I at least encourage him to change his own plugs. Not difficult just time consuming. Took me 3 hours and a half so hopefully next time I do my plugs I should be done quicker.

I already said I would do it myself. I was planning on it, but if it was going to be cheap at a shop I'd rather just save myself some time and let them do it. But at $550 it certainly wasn't worth it.

Thats good news. You made the right choice. That money can be used for mods.

Re: Shop Quote: Plugs and Wires

too bad your not up here in MI. Id do the labor for you for $75. piece of cake on an LS1. you can do it yourself and save money, and its not that hard. a tip for doin it on a stock LS1 is to unbolt the AIR tubes and swing them right out of the way. but #8 is still a pita compared to all the rest.

also, if your worried that some shop is BS'n ya about a price (as this place clearly IS) call a dealership and get a quote. we use published labor times so thats atleast a good reference to go from. ask your mechanic how many hours he's charging you labor, and make sure its the same as a dealership. I work at a dealership, and the labor rate is a little higher then some joe schmo shop, but you get reliable service, and fair labor charges. Im goin to take a stab and guess it prolly payes around 2.5 hours to change plugs/wires. (there should be no time for the wires, they have to come off the plugs to change them anyways right?) plus parts (should be in the $150 range)
