Simple bolt ons

When I bought my Z I figured that I wouldn't want to do anything to it because 300+hp is enough right? Wrong. I can't help myself, I have to do something to it. It's a disease.

But, money is short right now but I have to do something to it. I'd like the exhaust to be a little more pronounced. But like I said, money's short. So, a simple way to get deeper exhaust is to flow more air in.

I did a lot of reading on this forum last night and found entire threads about the smooth bellow being worth it, and others that say they brake the airbox and aren't worht it. I'm not dropping $40 on a slp bellows if I can get one from the Home Depot for $6. From what I've read, the slp just offers better looks.

Also, I have the stock air lid. I'll get an slp or ls1 motorsports or one of the others, but for now I'm thinking of just modifying the stock one. I seen a how to here and it looks so easy why not do it?

So, my question is, anyone run into trouble with the Home Depot bellow or modifying thier air box? Any cons to doing it?

Oh yeah, and a K&N. I've heard that the oils from the K&N can ruin the MAF on some cars. Any problem with it on the f-body?

Budget racing huh? I hear ya. Try going w/mods that will put the available power to the ground. LCA's aren't that expensive and less spin = better ET.

I don't care about the smooth bellows. IMO 1 hp isn't worth the trouble.

The link you have for the air lid is for the FRA (free ram air) mod. It does nothing for the air lid. An aftermarket lid gets rid of all the air silencer crap and flows better. Look around you can get used lids for $50.

I've been running K&N filters on FI cars for several years and have yet to have any porblems w/the MAF. I've heard people over oiling them and the oil coating the wires in the MAF. This is nothing a little spray w/ TB cleaner can't fix.

You can allows get a cutout for the exhaust for like $35 and it will add more hp and better sound. Just my .02 cents

Not really budget racing, just something cheap to do right now. With christmas almost here, the frist payment on the z, the last payment on my 93 blazer, insureance for the z, rent, credit card, the down payment I made on the camaro, ect, I just don't have too much money this month. But come next month I'll have some again.

As far as the bellows, the way I look at it is every little bit helps. If it's only $6, and it does absolutely nothing, so what. And if it does offer 1hp, $6 for 1hp is worth it to me.

So I guess, I'll go to ebay and look for a used airbox, go to home depot and check out a bellow, and take a look at moding the airbox.

Then when I have some money again, I'll look into the big ticket items.

I think the direct flo lid at ls1motorsports is around
75 right now. They are as good as any. I paid over
100 for mine.

Exhaust wise there are a lot of good sales going on
right now. I know you said money is tight but
both a GMMG chambered and Corsas are around
625 shipped. The GMMG never goes this low.
Or you could go loudmouth/magnaflow for 300ish
or cutout.

LCA's/PHR aren't that good of a early mod.
I did them and would have rather picked up
something else. Now if your a track guy then
go ahead.

Thing to keep in mind is if you buy something good
you won't have to buy another. And if you skimp
you'll probably wish you just saved up anyway and
end up disappointed. Keep your eye on the sponsers
sales forum, its a great way to save or Ebay.

I'm jumping at the Corsa sale with my Xmas bonus
then some bilsteins-waiting for a sale.
I'm a budget guy too

GOOD LUCK

Also skip the bellows. Only a few HP at most if any.
Plus I had them with my direct flo lid at it pulled
the lid off the filter-doesn't give adequate movement.
More of a dress up mod than anything.
Ended up selling it on ebay.

You'd be better off with the velocity stack.
same money and you could actually get some
low end TQ-however we're still waiting for dynos.
Vararam is a big name in C5 induction parts and
the only company I know the gives a money back
gaurantee on their products doing what they claim.

And a cutout won't get you 20rwhp. 10 is about
all your gonna get with any after the cat setup. You buy
stuff based on looks and sound.
