Umm...I don't know what SS hoods you're thinking of, but my factory OEM hood is functional. They all came that way. It's not quite as efficient as the WS6's because it loops around the underside of the hood, but it's still functional. Keep in mind...although the sticker says "Ram Air," neither car truely has Ram Air from the factory. It's basically a cold-air kit. In order for it to be a true ram air setup, the intake needs to be sealed so that pressure can build up the faster the car goes. The factory does make an attempt to control the flow of air with little pieces of weather stripping, but it doesn't quite seal the intake. Next time you see an SS, ask the owner to pop the hood and you can see what I'm talking about. Just make sure it's a real SS and not a Z that was converted by the owner.

Niether really get more hp from the hoods. Like stated already both do allow air into the air box, but the whole ram air thing on cars is kind of a joke. It is more of a cold air intake. The main reason WS6s and SSs have higher hp ratings is because of less restrictive exhaust.

18k sounds pretty good for those miles. You can check it out on kbb.com. Your location has a lot to do with the price too. Kind of weird if its being sold at the dealer and they can't get the light to turn off. Although the light turning on is common.

With the new emission laws they can not sell you a car with a check engine light glowing without agreeing to repair it. If you go try to get it diagnostic port inspected next year it will fail. New regulations say that it does not matter if its emission related or not , as long as it detects the light then you will fail.
Like the dealer that sold me my car...
It had a bad 02 sensor and they wrote me a "we owe" slip to bring it in for service. I guess some dealers will try to sell these cars like that and after one year they will say its not their responsibility. That is why you need to approach them about this now.

Later

IF the car is in EXCELLENT shape, 18,000 is a good to great price depending on how well it's optioned (tops, leather, chrome, stereo, exhaust).

As far as the check engine light though, I'd tell them to get bent unless they fix it. A check engine light on isn't "common" at 17,000 miles (or any other amount). It's on for a reason......something needs fixed.

Coming from a guy that drives both an M6 and an A4 LS1...I love the M6 so much more. If you're good w/a stick, the car really has a lot more in it than an A4.

Do you live in a cold area.
I bought two LS1's and tested another
(as some know I've had over a dozen)
in the middle of winter that had been sitting
for awhile-one needed jumped- that had
Check lights on. Turned out to be nothing.
I think the sitting may have effected something
in the start up computer cycles-air pump or o2 sensor
that turned out as a false code.

I'd definitly lood into though.

I just checked on our '01 SS... And no, the hood is not functional. It's closed off, and there's no possible place that area could get in through the scoop.

There does seem to be an opening at the front end of the hood, but I honestly do not think that serves a purpose, except maybe to bring cool air to the engine (not INTO the engine)

The kind of semi circle shape under the hood is where the air travels. That part at the front of the hood you are talking about is where the air comes out. It is meant for the intake because you can see they tried to somewhat seal the hood and intake with that rubber piece that is under the intake opening.
