Stock heat range or + 1???

Stock heat range or + 1???
Whats the story of putting plugs that are one or 2 heat ranges above stock. I understand the reasoning behind it, hotter plugs get a better burn of the air/fuel mixture. Is this going to hurt my engine, and give me any noticable gains?
