supercharger or heads + cam

Hey guys the summer is rapidly ending n i'm gunna start savin for the next mod. I can't make my mind up as to supercharge it or install a heads cam package in about a yr the car is gunna be made strictly a summer/ weekend car. I don't wanna put on any mods that are goin to affect the driveability of the car. I usually take it down the highway to the hangout about once a week. Considering this which would be a better choice for the car it has 51,600 miles on it. So, i'm at a cross roads as to what I should do. I don't wanna put the stress of a supercharger on the engine. Any recommendations on a good driveable heads cam package? Also what would be the price to do sc vs hc I saw a powerdyne sc in jegs for 3700 would a good heads and cam package be cheaper? I want to put in a real power adder but don't wanna kill the engine. Nitrous is not a option here. thanks guys i dunno what to do. i kno u guys will say headers they r comin

If you got the cash a blower is the way to go.

Hey Norm. I would do heads/cam because the blower can have A LOT of hidden costs. Most people I know the run superchargers have had to rebuild the engine.

1. Crankshaft: Can handle under 10lbs of boost as long as it is not spun over 6000 rpm.

2. Connecting Rods: Can handle 8-10lbs of boost, but is is higly recommended that you get steel or aluminum rods.

3. Pistons: Stock pistons can only handle 3-5 lbs of boost. Mainly due to compression ratios. I don't know the ls1 offhand but an LT1 is 10.4 to 1. If I ran the normal 8 lbs of boost that would become a 16.2 to 1 ratio, way to high for pump gas (12 is about as high as you can go.)

I am just doing a head and cam setup in a year or two, I will alos stroke it to a 396 . My advice is to stay away from the blower unless you have the extra money to blow on busted parts. Try asking about it in the forced induction area, they will tell you the same thing.

EDIT: The formula for compression ratios is:

final compression ratio = [(boost / 14.7) + 1] x current compression ratio

We can get you into a heads/cam setup for a very reasonable price. I can get you a set of stage II 5.3 Patriot Performance heads for $1,295.00, outright. We flowed the heads and they did 296 @ .600" on the intake and 220 @ .600" on the exhaust. The heads come fully assembled with dual springs. As for cam, that's up to you on what you think is streetable. If you are just looking for a street cam, the 224 single pattern seems to be very popular. It will give you some nice power and still be plenty streetable. If you are looking for a little more power, then we have a 228 single pattern. But like I said, it all depends on what kind of setup you want. We have quite a few cams to choose from.
We have a heads/cam package that includes the Patriot heads, your choice of TSP cam, Manley hardened pushrods, and a Rollmaster double roller heat-treated timing set for $1,879.99+ shipping. You can check out all our cams and packages at www.texas-speed.com.
We can get you a pakage to fit what your looking for.
What all have you done to the car so far?

Brian

50,000 miles is not bad at all, the motor is still good. Do yourself a favor, get a simple nitrous kit, install it, take it to a tuner, & have the car safe to run a 125 shot. You will be very pleased, and it will be safe. As safe as a supercharger.

Then save your money up to do a complete motor upgrade along with a supercharger, if that's what you want. Good luck.
