Supercharger, or Heads/Cam...
Hey guys. Mods are in my sig. I am getting the FLP Headers soon. What should I do next? Buy a supercharger, or go with a heads/cam/valve spring, lifter, etc. swap? In case you are wondering, I'm trying to get into the 10's. Let me know what is the smarter choice, New to modding, and have a LOT to learn, so trying to do this right the first time, thanks.

I vote for heads cam....but that wont put you into the 10s without a SERIOUS launch, and I mean sub 1.5 60 foot. Most likely youll need weight reduction and that kind of 60 foot. A little 50 or 75 shot would put you there though. A supercharger (alone) will not unless you run so much boost that youd get about 5 passes out of the engine before it let go.
A local guy here runs 11.30s with about 440 rwhp, a 1.6ish 60 foot, and a little weight reduction. Thats heads/cam..

well...supercharging will net you more hp for sure. however, it will leave a greater chance more problems with the engine. if you are conservative on the boost and have a proper tune with the a/f esp., you SHOULD be ok. heads/cam will no doubt be the safer route...but wont get you as much hp. theres alot that can be said about this...it really comes down to what you decide, then more questions can be answered

Apparently, I didn't convey clear enough in my last post. What I was trying to say was, I am doing BOTH a Head/Cam change, AND supercharger with like 8# of boost. That should get me somewhere NEAR the 10's without weight reduction, right? Maybe by adding a high stall converter? What my main question is, though, considering I will be doing Heads/Cam AND a supercharger with 8# of boost, which is the right way to go? Put the supercharger on first, or do a Heads/cam then a supercharger? And are you guys saying a supercharger will kill my engine? Let me know, thanks.
PS: This car needs to stay street legal.

IMO, I'd say change your heads and cam first. You want to know exactly what you're running before you go bolting a supercharger on - and especially if you're going to change engine components. You could put the blower on first, but I think it would be easier to tune it to your engine than to tune the engine around the blower. JMO.
NAKSTOCKZ28: I didn't fail my quiz, but I'll re-write the last line to make it clearer:

nonono...if your doing only head/cam/sc, then you do the s/c first! you get the boost hooked up...dialed it to where you want it, then you move to the internals. when you put in a cam, youll want to use a blower cam...which is specifically designed for people who have a blower on their car. without the blower on their car that cam will show very minimal gains...but with the blower on it will be a nice healthy addition. same with the heads...do the blower first!

Option 3: save up and do them all at once?! Probably a lot easier!
supersp0rt: you're probably right. I've never dealt with a supercharger before, so I was just thinking that order would make sense. I'm sure it could be done either way, but maybe you're method is best.

Can someone give me some more suggestions? Which would you guys do first? Build the motor, or do a Supercharger? And do you guys think a SC will eat away at your engine, and decrease the life expectancy? Let me know, thanks.

anytime you add more power to the engine it becomes more likely to "injury". with that said...a s/c can increase the wear on the drivetrain...and anytime you have a hp increase you are more likely to have to replace parts. "if you want to play, youve got to pay"...you hear it all the time and its really true.

I think we need more opinions, cause I still say I'd build my motor first (and when adding boost, it may not be a bad thing to change out your pistons for forged pistons as well). Obviously you'd build the motor with the intentions of adding a blower, but I wouldn't bolt the blower onto my stock motor (even though I'm sure it could take it).

Heads/cam first...Get your internals built up for the supercharger and Honestly I might go a bit more then just a heads and cam just to be safe...Supercharging is great but it puts wear and tear big time on your motor..Figure this if you got your stuff built for the supercharger your setup is going to work that much better and you know it won't break because its already built..Hence less time on fixing the car and more time enjoying it.

plan it out.
Sit down and think.. What exactly do you want to achieve at the end? (how deep in the 10's, street or drag only form, how reliable/maintanence) Then, what are the options for the means? (highstrung NA, boost, cubic inches?) Finally, what can you really afford in both time and money?
If you write down exactly what you want to achive at the end, and call up a shop (like one of the sponsers) and seriously talk to them, they'll be more than happy to help you..
IMHO, I would either get a nicely tuned heads and cam setup and settle for like reliable mid high 11's without killing the car or leaning too far in the straight line only world... or go all out and get a 7.0L Ls1 and be done with it all for the engine at least.

wowowo...wait a min. if you want to build up your bottom end first i understand that...but heads and cam is the wrong idea. if you want to build up the bottom end youre typically talking about the crank, backing down the pistons, and forged rods. however, retainers and valvesprings certainly wont hurt. if he would do it in this order...he would easily drop as much as he would for heads/cam...probably more. not to mention installation...
