On my '99 , the dang driver's side keeps popping out a little bit.

I wanted to take it off & have a looksee -

is there anything special I should now ?

I am guessing that a small screwdriver into the lock tabs would loosen it, but don't wanna screw up the paint.

Yes, the flathead screwdriver will work wonderfully. I just slowly popped mine out, from side to side. Then it just clicks back in.
