torquer v.3 LSA question about driveability

i am planning a somewhat daily driver buildup of my 02 ss m6, my plans are texas speed 5.3l stage 2.5 heads, fast 90/90 intake, torquer v.3 cam, pacesetter lt's, texas-speed catted y pipe and gmmg exhaust to name the more important items, now my question is: the stock LSA for the v.3 is 111 degrees, how will the option for the 112 affect the driveability with 3.73's, my original intentions were to just use the car for driving back and forth to base ( about 3 miles) now i have to make a trip to maryland from north carolina in june and stay up there for 2 months for a tech coarse, so i need to make this as much of a streetable build as possible without sacrificing power, my goal is 450 rwhp, any suggestions are appreciated thank you

111 v2 112. You won't notice a difference w/ 1*.

Streetable? Teke184 is running a Torquer V2 cam. He'll probably chime in, but people run the MS3, MS4, F15, and TRex on daily drivers. It all depends on what you can put up with and how good your tuner is. I'd personally rather run the lower lift of the V2 for longer spring life.

Besides the lower lift the V2 is available in a 114 LSA, which will make the car much much more driveable. The new C6 Z06 has a LSA of 116 or 117 just for that reason.

I currently have the original torquer on a 112 and will be rebuilding my 402, and have just emailed Jason for his recommendation but I am guessin the magic stick 3 or torquer v2 on a 114.

actually i think i have the first version of the torquer...on a 112 lobe.

and i drive mine in mild city regularly. and it is still very tame on the highway. on several long trips i've knocked down 24-25mpg cruising at 75-80mph with the ttops off.

you'll be fine with the 111 or 112...and should be no problem hitting your hp goal with the heads and FAST.

with the old version i'm at 400rwhp or so right now, and it's not the best tune i don't think. the heads and intake should really open it up.

Only you know what you are looking at for driveability and what your sensibilities are. If you can accept a 900+ rpm idle and some bucking surging and maybe some cruise control (hanging rpms) at low speed driving than the 112 or even 110 is fine.

Driving 3 miles at 50 miles/hour is not a problem with either. It is stop and go driving that gets difficult with a big cam or tight LSA.

So is your assignment in Maryland in an urban area or on a base? Is your 3 miles to base stoplight after stoplight with no chance to open it up inbetween or is it a hiway with little traffic. Heck it can be important if your work is 8 to 5 or if you work the swing shift so you miss traffic all the time. It even can make a difference whether you are in class As all the time or in fatigues (or whatever they are called today). I find dealing with a big cam in traffic with a suit and briefcase and large leather soled tie shoes to be much more difficult than going somewhere in the car in shorts and sneakers.

I think that the Fbody is a poor DD simply because you need to put it on like a pair of tights. Additionally the coupe style makes for very long doors that are hard to get in and out of particularly if you have a case/papers/packages with you. The rear seat is impossible and inconvenient. Having said all that it is an unmatched batch of fun on the twisties or stoplight to stoplight on the right kind of roads and unpopulated places. And those better DDs have way to much weight and height to be near as much fun as our cars.

I got torquer v3 with 111 lsa. It is very streetable. I was able to get it around town on stock tune. I am working with hptuners though. Just by tweaking the ve table a bit and a few other settings, it idles almost every time and drives awesome. A little surge at ~1700 rpms but any cam this size will do that. Vacuum and such is fine, brakes work, etc. It drives awesome, gas mileage doesnt seem bad.

Now this is the ying and yang of driveability. This is a car that I could not stand. "idles almost every time..." "brakes work," "surge at ~1700 rpms.."

Yet this gentlemen is quite happy with it. So you need to take all these posts with a pound of salt about driveability. My personal preference is a car that idles and runs as if stock but carries about 600 hp NA. The 600 hp is easy. The idles and runs like stock has eluded me at the 600 hp level.

I have found it at the 475 hp level easily with my LT1 383s, but am still trying to get there with my LS2 402. The extra hp is great, but the loss of low speed driving manners is unacceptable at least with the current cam I am using.

yeah...but he's also tuning it himself.

in the hands of a well qualified tuner...the cam should tune nicely and drive very good.

my tune isn't great...least not the part throttle...

and my idle fluctuates a little at a stoplight but settles out after about 15 sec. i've never had it stall at a light...just when i try to drive immediately after start up (when cold)...but then again i have a touchy stage 4 clutch and super light alum flywheel.

i have some surge right around 1500rpm in some gears, but not in others. nothing too difficult to alleviate with a lower gear and slightly more throttle.

car cruises along nice at 1500rpm in 6th on the highway.

I am not done tuning it. I just got hptuners two days ago and I think it runs awesome for a few modifications. It isn't hard, I just haven't had time to optimize the timing, and RAF, etc Tables yet. I do have my VE table and Power enrichment just about perfect though. I bet with a little bit more reading and research i can eliminate the surge and the idle issue. And the reason I am happy about it is that it is like "the car has personality". It's not your grandma's car anymore if you will. You gotta make and effort to tame the beast.

I wasn't trying to show you any disrespect simply to point out that the definition of driveable will vary widely.

I know the hours of effort it takes to make a big cam idle and be a lamb on the road and a beast at the track. I have gotten there with smaller cams on a 114, but have not been able to make this big cam on a 112 suit me yet.

Enjoy the winter......or transfer to ASU. I store my cars in the summer and use them in the winter.
