tranny advice/help/etc
OK, I need some big time help. I seem to always encounter the 'worst case scenario'.
I had the dreaded P1870 torque converter clutch slipping code. Took it to the dealer a few weeks ago. They said (which is what everyone on other vehicle boards has done) it needed a new valve body. Had that done. $700. Ouch.
Then, last Monday I was worried because it started shifting hard again (just like it did before it threw the P1870 code). Sure enough, last night it started shifting hard again and the SES (Service Engine Soon) light popped on. $700 out the window.
I had a Yank 3000 installed about 6 months ago. I broke in the TC VERY CAREFULLY and exceeded their caution requirements.
My questions are these:
1. with Yank having a carbon ceramic clutch, is it possible to ruin it with excess slipping over a SHORT period of time ?
2. is it possible that the bad valve body caused the Yank clutch to fail ?
3. is it possible that the 2nd valve body is as bad as the first
4. if I have my original TC put back in and the code pops again, can I make the dealer cover my cost for the 2nd bad valve body.
5. I tried the tests for seeing if my lockup was working (driving around 50mph then tapping the brake - no rpm jump for it coming out of lockup) any other way to tell if it's locking up ?
6. How can I tell for SURE that the TC clutch is fried ? Just because it won't lockup ?
If they say it's now probably the TC going bad as a result of the valve body, how long with the TC last (I have a tranny cooler) ?
(I can't believe at this point that the slipping caused heat that triggered the P1870. Reason: temps when the code was thrown was 55 degrees WITH a tranny cooler !)
The above wouldn't hurt the tranny overall would it ?
I know there are a lot of questions, but I think this would help me and also caution anyone else that encounters this code.
Oh, and lastly can Yank (if it's the TC) rebuild the TC clutch or it the whole thing fried ? Any idea how much a rebuild would cost ?
Unfortunately it looks like all my options wreak of $$$$$$
