v6 to v8 swap, opinions plz
I used to want to put a T70 turbo on my 3.8L v6, but I see the cost of an engine rebuild (~$3k - $4k) waay too much! With all that money I could buy a turbo or throw in an ls1.
I think I will get an ls1, it would be best bang for the buck.
I'm sure an Lt1 would be cheaper.
With that said, what ls1 should I get? Where should I get it?
What Tranny should I get?
What rear end should I get?
Anything else I'm missing? I need ALOT of help!!
thanks

sell your V6 and buy and LS1 car.
it's huge job, and i'd be willing to bet it would cost more than $3000-4000 to do it.
best way to do it is to buy an donor car. otherwise you'll be searching and searching for small misc parts. which is what can cost you alot of money

yea, was thinking of getting a donor car.
i would sell my v6, but its a 2002, we've worked very hard for
this car, so its my baby...
my car has mods like SFCs welded.
summit sucks, they only have carbed engines, isnt EFI way better?
what is a crate engine?

Re: v6 to v8 swap, opinions plz
who said anything about summit sucking?? they are a good place for alot of good parts. you just have to know what you're looking for, since they only have a small area for Fbodies.
carb motors are much simpler to get running, and sometimes cheaper.
EFI tends to get better gas milage and more efficient.
a crate engine is a running motor that you purchase, it comes in a crate. you stick it in your car, hook up some wires, hoses, accessories, and exhaust and fire it up. all the internal building is done for you.
and i realize you love your car, but at the cost of buying and swapping everything...it really isn't worth it.

might wanna check on the:
LS1 accessories, a/c, abs, power steering
driveshaft
kmember
radiator/ cooling system
wireharness (engine, relay, interior)
rear end
fuel pump
fuel lines
rails
dont forget hoses!!!
I did a v6 to lt1 swap...and I'd do it again.
Its a big job. make sure you have plenty of $ on hand, and a lot of time. Also, a daily driver...

Re: v6 to v8 swap, opinions plz
did a quick search on www.carmax.com nationwide and came up with this list.
prices on 98-02 z28s and SSs run from about $10K to $19K
granted these are nice cars, carmax doesn't deal in junk. and most are pretty low miles.
the down side of getting an LS1 car is that you'll have to insure it as one. a v6-v8 swap should still allow you to insure it as a "slow" v6.

Turbo 3800 > stock LS1 > stock LT1
Not to mention you'd have a nice sleeper. For $3k you couldn't switch engines and have them as fast as a nicely built turbo 3800. The turbo 3800 I saw made 350 whp on the stock engine.

i tend to agree...
be different....boost the six
even if it starts off slower than an LS1...you'll have some bragging rights. and plenty more money to work with.

Re: v6 to v8 swap, opinions plz
You have a LOT of questions, which makes me think that doing the swap isn't such a good thing. In the end its going to cost a good amount of money by the time you find an LS1 + T56 plus all of the tiny little things you'll forget about and have to buy along the way.
You would be a lot better off selling the car and putting that money towards a real LS1 car. They are getting so cheap these days that it is hard to justify swapping an LS1 into a V6 car unless you have a lot of extra money and time.
