Want to Learn more about the LS1..

Give me some good sites or BOOKS or places to learn about the Ls1 motor and engines in general. I'm retarded when it comes to this stuff but I would like to enlighten myself.

What I'm looking for are recommended books preferably, and recomendations on what to learn first and where to go from there. I don't know much to begin with, and what I do know I would like to reinforce with a trusted source anyways.. so lets pretend I know nothing (not far from the truth.. lol.)

Thanks for helping out a "newbie" into the world of cars..

Have you tried the local library? I don't think you're gonna find to many books on the ls1/6 motors since they're so new but I know there are a few around. Your best bet is to just browse the boards and look at bolt aspects of the motors, then more complex things such as camshafts, cylinder heads......Also read up in magazines espcieally gmhightechperformance, they usually always have a few ls1 write ups in each mag. Good luck on your learning endeavor

I found a couple good books at the local bookstore. It was one of those big stores like Barnes and Noble. They were located in the magazine section, so you might want to asl where they are located at your store. They talked about in general and what modifacations to do to the engine.

I do read up around here but see there are diffrent opinions and all that and some of it isn't 100% fact. I would like a published source more then anything, and preferably a Book, not a magazine... thuogh I do read GM HT and Super Chevy.. (When they have stuff about LS1's).

Isn't it interesting that a book implies more legitimacy/truth than what you might find on the web.

I find the web to be very instructive as the people who are actually using/modifying these engines are located on the web. Yes you do have to decide what is true and what is not, but the other members of the various groups usuually do this for you. In fact, as we have seen many times on this board, what works for one person, may not work for another. Witness all the discussions on paper vs. oiled air filters, catbacks, headers, etc.

As you are looking for a book on these engines, what type of book are you looking for? One to tell you the trade-offs of diferrent performance mods? How the various systems work? How a cam affects the engine? History of the engine? How to overhaul/disassemble the engine? Best way to tune the engine? Different records achieved with the engine?...

Amazon.com shows 367 results for the query: ls1 engine
including:

How To Build High-performance Chevy Ls1/ls6 Engines by WILL HANDZEL
Chevy Ls1/Ls6 Performance by Christopher P. Endres
How to Tune & Modify Your Camaro 1982-1998 (Motorbooks Powertech Series) by Jason Scott
Camaro (Muscle Car Color History) by Steve Statham

etc.

For myself, the web has proven a valuable tool. Granted, sometimes I have to wade through BS and stupidity, but overall the content is good.

If you really want a book, Barnes and Noble or Borders Books sells one on LS1 and LS6 performance engines for $19. It's an excellent source of info for a "beginner". I bought it for a friend with an 02 SS for Christmas...but read it first Another good book for the Camaro is "How to Tune and Modify your Camaro 1982-1998 by MotorBooks #126481. This is a super source of info on suspension and related info and is also available at Barnes and Noble or Border's Books.

Hope this helps
