It allows a small portion of your unmuffled exhaust to bypass the muffler. It is pretty much a sound mod, it's not a hp producing mod.
I know it's a little more expensive than a free mod, but for $140 I had my Dynomouth paid for, shipped, and professionally installed. No cat back can claim that. The muffler flows over 2200 cfm and you can feel the power increase. To top it off it makes a beautiful sound. Check my sig for a clip.

I had that done on my 2001 Z28 and loved the sound. It cost me $10 at a muffler shop.
It was a privately owned shop and I paid cash, no receipt ... but $10 qualifies as a free mod in my book.
Have them put a 2" straight pipe between the inlet/outlet on the passenger side. That's it. It should take about 10 - 15 minutes for them to do it.
The guy who did mine didn't understand what I was talking about or why I wanted to do it until I told him to just humor me and stick the car on the rack. I showed him what I wanted and although he didn't understand why, he did it for me. When he cranked it up and pulled it off the rack, he understood.
HP gain? Nope ... but it's a cheap way to get a better sound. It sounds stock when you're just idling, but when you get on it, you get a much better exhaust note.

I did that on my 2000, same deal no HP gain but the car sounds much better when you get on it.

That was my theory. It's a great sound and would work until I got the $600 for a stainless cat-back.
Of course, I no longer have that car.

Actually the way I did it was to go to pep-boys and buy a piece of exhaust tubing and weld it in. I tried the way the directions were and it fell off within 4 weeks.

Yeah, that's why I stopped in at a muffler shop. They took a 2" diameter piece of exhaust tubing, cut the holes in my pipes, and welded the new piece in place.
It was still there when I totalled the car a year later.
