Post Whats the difference between the 98-00 & 01-02 LS1's?

As the title says, I keep seeing parts listed as 98-00 & 01-02. What all did they change to the ls1 then?

Thanks

Steve

i'm sure i'll be corrected if i'm wrong but... here's the diffs that i know:

98 had 26# injectors
99-00 had 24# injectors
01+ had 26# injectors and the ls6 intake and no EGR

and i believe the 02's got a little bit different cam, something about the base circle being smaller??

i do believe that they did change the cam i have heard that they went to a cam that was designed for the chevy trucks so that the ls1 would make more torque on the low end.

Cool

You're right on the injector changes, just the wrong sizes. '98's had 28# injectors, 99-00 had 26#, and the '01-'02's have 28.5# injectors. They also started using the truck cam in the '01+ cars, as well as the LS6 intake and no EGR. The exhaust manifolds changed in '00, so that's why you see headers listed as 98-99 and 00-02. I've also been told that the head casting procedure changed for the '01+ cars, but I've yet to have that verified.

Gear ratios in 98-99 are higher as well unless you took the 3:23 option in the Z. the SS have 3:42. The other Z's have 2:73
airplane gears, but good on the highway!

You can check yourself if you don't already know: Codes = GU2 = 2:73
GU5 = 3:23
on Z28's.

Not quiet. In the Z28 A4 2.73 is standard. the 3.23 is the performance option. All Z28 M6s come with the 3.42. The SS comes with the 3.42 only if it is a M6, I don't know if the perfomance option was inclusive in the A4 SS packages

The '02 came standard with Z rated tires and I also believe the power steering cooler is standard on the '02 - but I'm not sure.

not really related to parts you buy, but there was a discussion on ls1.com how in 2001 and 2002 I believe the automatics, had a low torque start option where if you put the shifter at "2" it would start in 2nd gear for low traction surfaces like snow or rain. In the prior years if you had it in "2" in the auto it would still start in 1st gear, but not shift past 2nd.

I see some of you guys are posting about the different gears. I have the 2.73 ones....not the performance option. Is there really a huge difference between the two....do the 2.73's really dog the car in any way?

i dont know if they come stock with the z06 clutch but i do know that they had probs with the z28 clutches and when you went to the dealership to have it replaced they put the z06 clutch in.
