Who will win?
Friend of mine is giving me hell to race for 50 bucks.. he has an 88 iroc, with a 350 in it that has a performer rpm intake, a speed demon 700 or so carb and around a 550 lift cam. I know he's probably making a good amount of power.. He says 500hp.. I don't think that's right, but none the less.. It's a 5 speed with a stock 10 bolt rearend and eagle gt ii tires.. I've heard he is pretty traction impaired. Which will probably give me the launch advantage.. Somebody tell me I have a chance I mean.. I'm not sure how well on top end those old motors do with a big cam like that.. I don't know if the gearing in the 5 speed he has will help me out.. I don't know what kind of power he is probably actually making.. because I don't think it is 500 without a lil more cam and some better heads.. (his are ported, but i think they are pretty mild, from the way he describes the 5000 he has in the total motor)...

just run him.. and do it at the track.. more fun.. cause you can beat in front or people legally and not have to worry about "where the race ended and at what speed"..
I would think you could take him with just some headwork and intake.. I beat a 69 that was loping hard at the track.. and I had just been on a 80 mile drive and it was my first pass still hot from the drive.

I would think you could take him with just some headwork and intake.. I beat a 69 that was loping hard at the track.. and I had just been on a 80 mile drive and it was my first pass still hot from the drive.

Hes not making a whole lot of power if he is running the stock 5 speed
Ive seen 14 second 305's tear them up.

383 Eagle stroker that is using a stock bore so its actually a 377 stroker
comp cam roller ca with over .550 lift
Comp cams magnu roller rockers
Victor Jr. heads
Victor Jr. Intake
750 Speed Demon
about 10:0-1 compression
Full MSD ignition
I pretty Much sold all of this to him from Ramchargers where i work
And on pump gas, on an engine dyno with no accesories. It made about 450hp
itl make less with accesories...
Prolly 375-390 at the wheel.
IT WILL NOT KEEP A T-5 Tranny. He will be doin a T56 swap so you can race it.

Thanx for the replies.. He does have the stock 5 speed, it has a new clutch.. but I'm sure it sucks.. he also has the stock rearend, which I know he can't make that much power cuz he should tear that thing up.. He has no accessories.. I'm pretty sure it'll be closer than he realizes, he thinks he will eat me.. I only have about 315rwhp.. and my car runs high 12's low 13's.. I'll let you guys know how it turns out, as I will be racing him within the weeks.. If I win.. it'll be in the kills section

Either your friend is an idiot or he is hiding something. I doubt he has 500hp there. If you can drive your car well, you got him. Take his money.

Ok, sounds like there's a couple things wrong with your friends car. First of all, an 88 iroc with a 350 was tpi, so either it's not an 88 or he put the carb on himself. second, there weren't any tpi 350's with a 5 speed stock, so either he put it in himself or swapped the engine or something.
anyway, i'd watch out. either he has no idea what he's talking about, or he's got more work into his car than he's telling you. just my .02

i had an 89 iroc 350 5 speed. he is correct that chevy never made this combo. i put the 350 in there with all boltons, gears, and some susp. stuff. it was tpi. this car ran like a bat out a hell. it would toast an ls1 all day. if your still stock i would still run him but not for money. jmo

Motor is not stock.. he has around 5k in it.. Complete motor changeout.. and the tranny supposedly came in the car? it has an ugly silver shifter ****..but looks stock other than that.. I'm excited.. If I win I'm going to email every single person who answered me a dollar.. hehe

My brother just gave me an update after I posted.. Grant (the friend) said that he knew he could beat me by at least 7 cars regardless of traction. The terms have changed to fun rather than cash.. So the new terms are, if he beats me by more than 7 cars up to 120, car lengths to be judged by a mutual friend, that I have to call him my daddy for 2 months. If I win the opposite.. hehe I wish I had a video camera, or I'd record it for you guys
P.S. I'm pretty sure I can fend off 7 cars to 120.. I'm not too bad of a driver..

it might be closer than you think. i don't think he could put 7 car lengths on you, especially to 120. what kind of gears does he have?
anyway, if he has to put 7 cars on you to win, i think he'll be calling you daddy for a while...

If he didn't put any $$$'s into suspension or sticky tires, you'll probably win by a good bit. I like a deserted stretch of black top to find out the other guys lack of launch skills...

Results
Well, as I had expected I did not win the race. Here's how it went:
From a roll at 35-40 in 2nd gear. 2nd gear ended we stayed even going into 3rd.. he pulled about a 1/4 of a car through 3rd and into 4th.. as 4th went by he managed to pull the 1/4 car lead to a 2 car lead.. and I kept in it to the very tip of redline hoping he would run out of steam before I did and shift to 5th, he did not.. 4th ended.. and i went ahead and shifted to 5th hoping he would have to soon. However my overdrive even with the 4.10's wasn't good enough to stay with him that long and he pulled another 2 cars up to 135-140 where we both were in 5th and there wasn't much pulling. I decided we were already 15-20 over where I would feel safe racing to anywayz.. We tried to race 2 times with similar results.. We both agreed on 3-5 cars total up to 135-140.. So I am the daddy However, after getting to know the guy a lil more than I had previously and chilling out afterwords.. this guy turned out to be a great guy. Before, I had taken him as a jackass.. we gave each other a ride in cars... He was very impressed for the stock power in the ls1's. He also gave me a low down on his car.. here is what i know:
It is actually a .510 lift cam, but he has a higher ratio.. so whatever that calculates to.. He has a demon 700 carb, performer rpm intake, and edelbrock aluminum heads, which he didn't know much about but he insists that his machine shop man did a lil work to them. all this runs through some hooker headers with no cats and flowmasters dumping before the axle.. He has an upgraded clutch, and 3.73's, but the stock rearend and doesn't launch it unless he absolutely has to.. It does not make 500hp.. My bet was that it didn't make 500hp, maybe 425hp.. and so I lost the race.. but won the bet Highly possible I lost so bad cuz the gearing. That and he was still making power and shifting at 6500... so he pulled most on me when I hit 5th gear and he was still in 4th.. I did notice his whole car seemed to lose control of itself through each shift, the body would raise so high up it was ridicolous. Mine was stiff to the ground with shifts, and spectators noticed that it just barely moved.. that probably helped me out some...
