Will an exhaust cutout add more power than a catback?
At the track would an exhaust cutout be as beneficial to my 2002 z28 (basically stock engine) as a catback? I don't have the money for a full catback right now and I need to pick up 4 tenths to beat a 2003 supercharged mustang cobra. I think with some drg radials and a cutout I can beat the snake, his best time was a 13.1 at 108 on a really hot humid day and my best on that day was a 13.5 @106, this was also my worst day at the track with my camaro.

The cutout will likely give you more than a catback and save you a lot.
IMO, you're gonna be hard pressed to beat the cobra. Pure stock, some are running 12.6 (fortunately its too early for many mods on the car yet - but better intake and exhaust will really help that car). His times are rather iunimpressive, but once the guy learns to drive it better and puts some miles on it, I think you'll need much more puling power.

I have Flowmaster cat-back on my 98Z, and I was running 13.81-13.99 at the track. After I put on my cutout, I was 13.665-13.75. I definately gives you more than a cat-back.

It depends on the catback that you're running. If you have a great-flowing one like a Borla, SLP dual/dual, Hooker, etc., then the cutout will do just as well as the catback on a stock-internal LS1. If you are running the stock cat-back or another restrictive unit like the Flowmaster, then the cutout will show gains.

A cut-out will flow better than any cat-back ever will. It has no baffling to go through like a muffler, and it has less piping to push the exhaust through. The major complaint about cut-outs is that most folks think they sound crappy. Some like it...
I have some flow numbers for some mufflers:
Borla #40600: 836 cfm
DynoMax Ultra-Flo SS #17263: 1000 cfm
DynoMax Ultra-Flo Welded #17219: 1133 cfm
DynoMax Super Turbo #17733: 410 cfm
DynoMax Race Bullet #24222: 2200 cfm
Edelbrock #5511: 579 cfm
Edelbrock 304 SS #5560: 640 cfm
Flowmaster #42540: 352 cfm
Flowmaster #62631: 435 cfm
Flowmaster 50 Series: 362 cfm
It's clear from the wide range of flows that you can't compare no muffler to having one. The only muffler that mimics open pipe is the race bullet.
If you are on a budget and want a really good flowing set-up, great sound, and performance... go with a Dynomouth cat-back, the muffler flows 2200 cfm and I got mine for $140! That's with shipping, parts, professional installation, etc...
