$5k and 10s

Very possible with $5K in mods. How you do it is all dependent on what you want to do with the car. Do you want to spray the car, do you want to do it N/A, or do you want some other type of FI? We need to know things like this to point you in the right direction.

I forgot to mention, the only thing we agreed upon was no spray and $5k limit. ONLY new parts too.
as I said in my first post, this is hypothetical. I told him it can't be done unless its a junkyard build and won't last.
Its a debate between my friend and I. he says it can't be done all motor.
heads/cam/valvetrain, big stall, slicks, suspension work, and a lot of weight reduction.

his suggestion:
home made twin turbo kit. forged pistons. sticky tires. run 10s.
he says the only reason it hasn't happened yet is turbo technology is relatively new and that no one has tried it.

how many times are you trying to hit it? once...sure.
With 5k...doing the installation your self? maybe....if not...nope. Manual or auto?
figure this parts list:
headers, y-pipe, gaskets, welding everthing =$500
cai =$200
m/t drag radials =$400
stall convert, install plus lubricants, tranny cooler =$800
Used nitrous kit with accessories plus buying wire =$600
Hot cam kit, installed, plus dyno tune for nitrous =$1600
all this only netted like an 11.3...but good news you still have like $900 left over for a new rearend or a tranny rebuild...but your gonna want a built tranny and that is gonna run you like 1800-2200 with a stall plus you gotta put it in and thats 400 unless you do it your self.
so 5K....sounds like a lot but I dought you'll see the tens...especially when you start fixing:
optis, plugs, wires, waterpump, coils, thermostat, brakes, rearends, tranny's, and whatever the hell else breaks....good luck
i got 6.5K in the car...bone stock
and a running total of atleast (including car...counting everything breaking and maintenance for the last 4 yrs) of approximately 16K and Im only running 7.7x in the 1/8th...no where near 10's
granted with that 16k there is alot of "damn I wish I would have done that"...like wait and do heads same time as cam...I beg you just wait it's only like 800 more...just wait for the love of god!
So good luck,
Pride

Why not?
Cam ~$300
Heads ~$500 (to get your worked) or ~$1500 for a good set
Exhaust ~$800
Converter/Clutch ~900
Rotating assembly ~$1200
Machine work ~$800
Going the rout of getting your heads worked that's ~$4500 leaving you $500 for springs/retainers and what not and a tune, putting you just about at your $5K limit... plus you can always find deals on parts and get them a little cheaper and still be new. Going with a new set of heads puts you over but you don't have to do it that way.
All I'm saying is that it can be done... might take a little bit of time to piece together all the parts for good prices but non the less it can be done.
A little ways down the road I'm sure you would have to do something with the trans, but that's a given.

Turbo technology is nowhere near new, and it has been done by many. There is a bunch of turbo LT1's/LS1's running around, maybe not so much as turbo imports but whatever.

Rear end = $2000
Tires = $400
Heads/cam package = $1600
Uncoated headers, dumps, home-made cold air, self or cheap tune = $500
Gaskets, bolts, springs and crap = $500
Weight Reduction = $0
Do I win? It'd even be fairly reliable.
Oh wait hmmmm I forgot some stuff like injectors and valvetrain stuff..... so would have to scrap the rear end if you wanted it under $5,000. But it could certainly be done with an upgraded rear end for $5,999 or less.

You missed ALOT of stuff. Anyone who has actually done mods/engine work knows stuff is alot more expensive than it looks on paper.

just the total from my cam only build overshoots the target by $2,000 lol.
Only way I can think of that would come real close is:
heads/cam/ported intake/valvetrain: $3000
home built TH400: $500 maybe? don't know
some huge stall for the th400: $500
4.xx gears, self install: $250
mail order tune: $100
pacesetter LTs dumped: $280
fuel pump: $200
remove everything that is not necessary for racing. run alternator only. no ABS, no emissions, no interior except the driver's seat.
still gotta buy tires and I think that would put you over $5,000. didn't even include any suspension work either.
of course then you have the custom turbo setup route. my buddy built a turbo setup for his fox mustang for about $2500 (after many failed ebay turbo type trash). I don't see anyone doing it for much less on an f-body. still need a trans then and something better than a mail order tune.
he still claims he can do it but he has never owned an f-body and has only worked on one once. I told him I'll find him an LT1 for cheap and fund the project only if I get to keep the car if he's so confident lol.
