$1000 dollar tune up
My car has been stumbling at high speeds particularly between D and OD. It has backfired also. I wanted to get a tune up (even though i had it done 3 years ago).
i talked to the mechanic and he said that the average time is 6 hrs of work and said that with parts and all that it should cost "conservatively $1000 maybe more." What is the deal with that? I know that the LT1 is hard to work on but come on $1000 dollars for a tuneup? Opti is $300 lets say, $40 for plugs, something for wires, etc. i dont see how it adds up.
Im not going there but im just pissed off that everything on these cars is so much money.

oh yeah he said that the best wires are the split or double ended AC Delco wires because "a GM car Should stick with GM parts" i heard that NGK TR-55s are best for ours. any1 shed any light?

our cars are hard to work on, but its worth it . Do it yourself. You will save a ton. I did mine in about 3 hours for plugs and wires. The opti is not that bad to do either. IMO, dont replace the opti unless its broke. Heres what i would do, Change plugs/wires and coil and you should be set . P.S $1000 is steep.

A thousand dollars is really high for a tune up. And I wouldn't be certain if that fixes your problem. I would fix the normal things like plugs, wires, and small things like that yourself and see if that works out. I would also check your fuel filter.

changed the fuel filter, TP Sensor, checked all the sensors (myself not with a scanner), cleaned the air filter, and used a massive amount of fuel injector cleaner. i cant figure out what it is.
what would you guys do?

i wouldnt just go replacing all kinds of stuff.... I had that done at the dealer and it was only about 500 bucks to do all of that... so who knows what he is really charging you for. start simple with plugs/wires. see if anything is burned

if you are replacing the opti it sounds good to me.
I assume it inculdes plugs, wires, opti, coolant, oil at the least? maybe rear diff, trans, coil, themostat
parts alone will be about $1000.
i wouldn't change an opti, plugs wires oil and coolant for less than about $400-500 if i was a mechanic.

I suggest having your car analyzed to isolate the problem. Then and only then can can you decide on the couse of action.
A so-called tune-up can involve many different things, including those that can done in the shade e.g., checking serp belt, brake fluid, hoses, etc. Cleaning of injectors might include "complete removal and cleaning" or "throwing some crap in the fuel tank".
When considering a "tune-up" always get a list of what's included and the associated costs.
If I would have had the recommended "tune-ups" on my Bronco, I'd have paid around $600 every 30 miles. I didn't and now have 3x the miles and saved $1800.00. I.e., if it ain't broke...
And if it is broke....isolate and act. JMHO
