[O2 probs] What happens if I unplug the O2 sensor?

Ok, I've had a problem with the O2 lately. (on the right side) so I ordered a new set and put them in. The wires that go to the right side O2 got burnt on my headers about 2 years ago (redid the wiring) and I think that one of the wires has a loose connection now and needs to be redone again. (its throwing the code saying 'O2 rich' and, of course, dumping fuel to the cylinders like crazy) Its very intermittent . It'll run fine one second then run really bad...the 'SES' light will come on and it'll run fine...go off...run fine...then run like crap, throw the 'SES' light...over and over again. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem other than the bad/loose wire? That's where I'm going to look first as I'm 99% sure that'll fix the problem...but is there anything else (other than a bad PCM) that could cause this code? Also, I was just curious as to what would happen if I disconnected that O2?

Thanks in advance

If you unplug one, the PCM ignores both of them and stays in open loop with a set A/F ratio of 14.7:1.....your gas mileage will be pretty crappy.

Thanks for the reply! Will this also foul the plugs?

I burnt the black connector itself. I had to buy a new O2 for the passenger side about a year ago. At that time I rewired a new connector in that I got out of a junkyard into the harness. (however it was very cramped and apparently the connection has gone bad) What I now plan to do is unhook some of the harness so I can rewire it from the top so I'll have plenty of slack and can make sure I make a good connection this time. Sorry, I don't have any pics though...however, you're doing better on a tank of gas than I am! I only go 230 miles on a tank! Of course, I'm sure the heads/cam combo don't help, but still....

question

hey NONO5.0

Does your car throw black smoke out the back when you step on it ???/I ask this because mine runs like you describe......you know, crappy, then good, then a SES light then good , crappy etc. sometimes awful idle..........And I got a hunch it could be the O2's.

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR THE iNFO

Yep, same thing....changing out your O2's should fix the problem. However, I would think if its that bad, it'd throw the code for the O2

Well, my problem isn't really the O2's....its the fact that the wires got burnt on the headers causing the PCM to think the O2 was bad. However, when I had an O2 originally go out on me, black smoke came out of the exhaust like crazy so new O2's should fix your problem. However, don't buy the Bosch ones as I've heard bad things about them. Go with the AC Delco's. You can get a set of them off ebay shipped to your door for $70.50.

Hope this helps!
