When chasing my rocker noise I tried different lash settings. With my replacement Crane lifters anything more than about 1/2 turn past zero lash would cause the valve to stay open slightly and run very rough. I found the best power at 0 lash with mine. They are just as noisy at 0 lash than they are at 1/2 past. Self-aligning rockers tend to be more noisy than guide plate rockers. I can hear my rockers while driving my car if I listen closly, most noticable around 2000 RPM, any RPM above or below that and I cannot hear them. I can hear them while standing out side the car with the engine idleing also.

What if I threw some guide plates on my self aligning rockers would it hurt. Oh and I broke a damn valve spring. Im wondering if these valve springs have been whats causing all the valve train noise.

Don't run guide plates with S/A rockers. What springs are you using?

A broken spring is not a good sign. Did you check for coil bind?

I did not check for coil bind as I let the machine shop totally assemble the engine. Anybody have a suggestion on springs to use. I would rather not have to send the heads to the machine shop for bigger diameter springs.

You don't need to open up the spring pocket to run springs like the Crane 99893 or Comp 985. With the lift you have you will need to go with +.050 locks for Comp hardware or the +.100 retainers for Crane hardware. The Crane 10308 kit which includes the 99893 springs, comes with +.100 retainers. It also comes with crappy spring shims instead of locators. With the shims your installed height will be around 1.85" which is good, but the shims (.015") are no substitute for a good spring locator (.060"). With a locator like the Comp 4784 your installed height will be in the 1.80" range.

Here is some info for the Crane 99893 valve springs:

Outer Diameter 1.460
Inner Diameter(1) 1.075
Inner Diameter(2) 0.803
Damper NO
Seat Pressure @ Installed Height 130 lbs @ 1.850
Open Pressure and Height 402 lbs @ 1.150
Coil Bind 1.080
Maximum Net Lift w/.060" Clearance 0.710 (note that this decreases as installed height decreases from 1.85")
Average Spring Rate 391 lbs/in

Edited to add that my valvetrain was much louder with the installation of Pro Mags than when stock, and it got even louder after adding SLP shortys. There must be some type of sound associated with exhaust valves closing that was not there before with the stock manifolds.

At idle I didnt think my 1.6 gmpp's were much louder than stock...you really hear the sewing machine when you are at like 2k driving next to a wall. I did 1/2 turn after zero lash.
