I guess that is what mine is doing. That explains it being stuck at 5800 RPMs for a while, then finally shifting -- the tachometer is probably off at high RPMs too, I've heard of this before. Then when it does shift, doing ~160 MPH, it can't pull any more.

Get 3.23s and you should be able to hit 165mph, at around 5300 on the tach, which will be right at your power peak. You'd get more acceleration with 3.73s, but you'd over-rev in 4th (hurting top speed) unless you change the cam to shift your power peak accordingly.
I'm not worried about top speed at all. Though if I decide to keep my car, I'll probably put 3.42s in it along with a nice cam. 98-02 Trans Ams... they look so tempting... $$$

Re: 147 MPH - Won't go any faster?

i remember once in my 3.23's i was pinning it at about 119-120 and that thing couldnt get max out 3rd gear so it wouldnt shift, as soon as i got it to shift it started to pull again, but it needed a tune i think clogged cat and bad wires... something like that

so perhaps you need a tune but if uve got 2.73's deffinatly replace those
