160 T-stat killing the life span off my engine?

Would a 160 T-stat reduce my fuel economy and increasing the rate of wear on my engine. Also burning more fuel? I heard having the right T-stat (180) is best for the oil and emissions.

Thanks fellas

For power the best thermostat seems to be the 160. To really get into the science of engine wear and coolant temps, the difference is so small that it wont matter. You can run the 160 and the engine will live 99.99% as long. As for emissions, I just let the car heat up outside the emissions place to 200 or so, then emission it. with headers and aftermarket cat(random tech) and catback is has passed just as clean as when it was bone stock. I noticed no loss in gas mileage with a 160 t-stat.

I dont' believe 160 does a good enough job boiling water out of the oil. I also KNOW that it will hurt emmissions and gas mileage.. However you have to weigh those things when you decide to build your car. I don't think you'll notice much of any problems ever with one.

Heck, even K&N's are known to do damage.. I've seen a case study where K&N's where used in a industrial application to save money on filters.. Turns out they don't trap enough dirt and it was leading to equipment failure and premature overhaulings. I saw a simular report on K&N's baised on oil anylsis.... now do i still use them? You bet
