1st gear chatter...... normal?
From a standstill i get a grinding noise as I engage the clutch. Goes away after the clutch is fully engaged. This does not happen in reverse or any other gear. The clutch does not slip at all and does not give me any other problems.
It also makes a grinding sound while fully engaged trying to climb a hill in 1st. I.E. parking lot structure.
Is this normal? If not, what could it be?
Thanks

The tranny/clutch in my '96 M6 has chattered at sub-1200 RPMs in almost every gear since the day the car rolled off of the Pontiac delivery truck with 1 mile on the ODO. Numerous dealers looked at it and reported "normal T56 tranny noises". The car has 94k miles now and the tranny/clutch are still holding up perfectly.
EDIT: The noises mine make are more of a "growl" sound than grinding noises.

I've owned 2 T56 cars, and I've noticed they are very noisy. Chattering at idle, even when revving in idle, and taking off in first gear usually gets alot of chatter, especially at lower rpms. GM designed the T56 to be able to withstand lots of tq (and they did a great job). Unfortunately there are sacrifices that are made to have such a powerful trans, which is lots of rattling, growling, etc. Rest assured though, its absolutely normal.

I'm very glad to read this now instead of in a week when I was going to have the trans ripped out to find out if I needed a rebuild for these same sounds. I owe you guys a round for saving me a couple hundred $$$
