227/233 Dyno Results

I've seen a few posts in the last couple of weeks looking for Dyno Results from a 227/233 Cam. Well here they are:

350.9/340.6 SAE RWHP/RWTQ

These numbers are almost exactly what I dynoed with using a CC305 cam. In fact we overlayed the graphs and they are almost on top of each other. Only changes since the first dyno are the cam, springs, Moser 12 bolt(4.11's), and 30lb SVO injectors. I was a little disappointed but the car is running great and rev's quite a bit faster than with the CC305. Peak HP was at 5800 btw and began to drop off slightly after that. I was running richer than before, averaging 11.8:1 to a previous 12.8:1 A/F using wideband O2 dyno. Same exact dyno.

I would be interested to know if anyone else experienced a HP loss after putting in a 12 bolt and if so how much.

93ZM6....is that with or without ported heads? Please tell me you have stock heads. I recently swapped my old cam for this one, but dont have it up and running yet. All the numbers posted so far for this cam do not impress me. Im thinking of trading this cam for the 233/239 due to all the notsogood numbers while I still have time.

Combo originally told me this cam made 360rwhp in a stock head LT1(was a 6speed), and would spin/make power to 6300-64--rpm with ported heads. But, I have yet to see anything close to that hp number even with ported heads. And same goes for the powerband And yeah, a moser rear will eat up a good 15-20rwhp if not more. So, maybe you would have been looking at 370 or so with a stock rear, would be interesting to know how much was really lost. I hope its just everyones heads/head work and not the cam thats making these fairly depressing numbers. Do you have adjustable timing/cam gear? Maybe should try to advance/ratard it a few degress see what happens. Apparently that can really make or break some setups reguardless of the initial intended specs. Keep us update if get any new results.

Well you added 4.11 gears, thats a drop in HP on the dyno, you added a moser 12 bolt, that is also a 3-4% drop in HP, by putting in the Moser & 4.11 gears you prolly lost about 5% HP, so don't forget to add that to the formula, I would be happy if your graphs look almost identical with different cams, this means you didn't loose out on the bottom end power only gained all across the graph, then you lost 5% all across the graph with the rear.

Heads are locally done P&P. I know very little about them and the shop that did them, I find out later, has a terrible reputation. I over paid significantly and was a total newbie at the time. For what I paid I could have had them done right by people I've learned about on the board and had a good bit extra.

If I figure in a loss for the Moser and gears I probably actually gained a some HP, 10 maybe 15. About what I should expect for a cam and spring swap. Peak numbers were at 5800, 5900 and 6000 were already down slightly. I attribute this to my heads more than the cam. I know it's a major guessing game unless you really know your heads and then match the cam. I don't however buy that this cam made 360 on stock heads - with no other mods. That seems a little too "hopeful". The car revs faster, partly because of the gears and partly because of the XE lobes.

I only spun the car to 6k and was hoping to find a good shift point because I'm bouncing off of the rev-limiter, (6400), - a problem I never experienced with the CC305. But with a 4.5k launch, the car revs faster and I find myself short-shifting trying to find the optimum shift point with a stock tac. I've got a shift light coming and I plan on bumping up the rev-limiter to 6600 or maybe 6700, and I'll probably set my shift point somewhere around 6200 or 6300. I'm not entirely dis-heartened, I did the cam swap mostly because of a dowel pin problem, so I can't bitch and the car is running good. It's got 12.2's in it at least, without any more changes. I'm spinning on ET Streets and cutting a 1.71 60ft. A little better driving and maybe some LCA's and TA and I could be in the 1.60 or maybe even a little better.

Edit: BTW Cam is on a 111 LSA

Yeah, you probably did gain a good 15hp but then lost it again with the Moser. I remember seeing a guy on here(think it was an LS1)....anyhow, he was putting down around 355rwhp. He then switched to a Moser 12bolt and only 3.73gears. His rwhp dropped almost 25hp. Was like 23hp loss or something. I dont remember if he as stick or auto...but either way, I would suspect you to have lost at least 15hp also.

Did you ever get any specs on your heads? Any at all??

Also, maybe its that 111lsa. That can also make and break lots of setups. I almost got that on a 111, but finally decided on a 112 since I will be sparyin 300hp or so nitrous. I know, not really a nitrous cam, but spare me any lectures. I wanted to favor N/A.

All and all when I sit back and look at your numbers it I guess those number are not too bad. Its those damn LS1 numbers that always make us think the LT1 isnt making power, but % wise of increase, it seems about right. Given, you probably stole 15-20hp away with the rear, are running a little rich(good tuning maybe another 10hp) and dont know how good the heads really are(could be lots there, or not much..hard to tell. Need flow benched to see if that cam is decent for them). If all those were corrected(yeah, meaning a stock rear also) I bet you would be in the 380+ range easily.

Also, whats your exhaust setup and tranny? and what MPH is the car trapping?<---nevermind, just seen signature. Later!

Also don't forget, that XE cam won't rev past 6k rpm, at the track shift at 5900rpm & you'll get your best times, trust me! You'll never make as much power with an XE cam on the dyno because you can't rev as high, XE cams even that big cut out at 6krpm & just drop like a rock, a cam with that duration at .050 on regular lobes would have gotten you atleast another 20RWHP I think because you could have reved it to 6800rpm & you need to rev a 350 that high to get the air flowing.

Hope this helps.

So your telling me that all the XE grind cams will not make any power past 6000rpm(with ported heads)and even with more druation like a 233/239?

If so, then Im about to lose all hope and get rid of my 2nd XE cam. I dont want my LT1 to run like and IROC up top.

I have the 227/233 with Lloyd Elliot ported heads, LT's and so on and only put down 351hp/333tq through a M6. I was running very lean, at 14.0-14.1 all the way across the dyno chart, but still the numbers were a little lower than I had anticipated, especially the torque numbers. I still have a few bolt ons to do and get it fine tuned, but I think I may see 375hp out of the combo yet. Also, mine will only spin to about 6300rpm and then it falls on its face. If I had it to do over again I would probably go with the CC306 or the GM847 cam.

my little XE224/230 on a 112lsa and ported heads, my dyno graph peaked at 6200-6300rpm. it stayed flat until 6500 (thats as high as i took it on the dyno). i still have stock lifters also.

I think you just took the words out of my mouth. Mine is still new in box and motor is apart. I think Im gonna do some more cam searching yet again tonight and probably return my cam to combo tomorrow. Not 100% sure yet...but close from what Ive seen so far.
