3.73 gears are the way to go you say?

Hey sup guys its me again!

I want to get 3.73 gears, but don teven know where to get started. Does getting gears mean you need a new posi? I saw this eaton posi in the summit magazine sell for 439$, or can I use my stock posi and get the gears and manually install them? If this sounds like I don tknow what Im talking about please clairfy becuase Im clueless.

Currently I have 3inch exhuast a CAI and a4 with 2.73 gears. The car runs ok, but I want WAY more performance.

I will port my heads intake and get a 58MM TB, and get a nice cam. I will get longtubes and xpipe, along with full engine rebuild (i have 130kmiles) I will also get 3.73 gears with a 3200 stall. How much different will my car feel?

dude, If you get all that stuff done I would bet on a low 13 sec run. Your car will make you feel better than your first time Should pull like a mule. If ya do all that though, I would recommend adding some drag radials to the list. Maybe a rear end upgrade, Moser, or something. Also, some LCA's and other suspension junk. I don't think you'll need a new posi, unless yours is burnt up. If you go with a new rear ya don't hafta worry none. Good luck.

Actually, I think 4.10's are the "way to go".

Hi All,

If you have an automatic and street tires the 4.10 is too much gear. You want to think about how you use the car. The 3.73 combined with 2800-3200 stall is plenty for the street and should still get 14-15 mpg. If you drag race the 3.73 is almost too much if you plan to exceed 110 mph in 3rd gear. The eaton posi should be fine.

There is some talk that a shifting problem occurs in OBDI cars with a stall > 2800 but only at the dragstrip. The 58mm TB is overkill unless you are making > 600hp. Stock one is less idle trouble and better throttle response.

I just swapped in 3.73 for my 2.73 and I can tell you it is sweet on the street. The first time at the strip with the new gear I had calculated 107 as my top speed in 3rd gear. I hit 104.4 and 105.2 and was thinking I should have got 3.42 gear. I spent money on forged crank and pistons so I could run nitrous someday. I also have a cam for nitrous with a longer exhaust duration. I gave up porting on my heads to pay for the forged parts and this has cost me rpm at the top. In retrospect that was the wrong thing to do for a street car. I have had much more fun than I thought drag racing though so I may convert to strip only. I will probably undo my lowered suspension, switch to skinny front tires and change to long tube headers in a year or so.

More like a mid 12's car. Defiantly not a low 13 second car. Throwing in some DR's couldn't hurt either

i have intake, headers/exhuast, cam, and drag radials and i saw 12s with the 3.42s.. add in any ported head work and some 3.73s and you should see 12s...maybe not low 12s, that will depend on how well u get everything done, how well you hook, and how much your car weighs, but

the 3.42 or 3.73 is real good for an a4....3.73 is real sweet for a 6spd that gets alot of driving...i just went up to 3.73 and can feel the difference ,so imagine the jump you would feel up from 2.73

the posi could stay the same when you change gears, but its fairly difficult, especially the first time, to get all of the tools and do the job right...i recommend either getting a buddy to help that has done it correctly before (and then borrow all of the right tools) or go to a shop that u can trust to do everything right...or watch them and make them show u the shims and backlash and everything are right

If you don't know anything about the rear gears, you definitely don't want to be working on them yourself. From a lot of the posts I have read on here, even "professionals" (term used loosely) have a hard time setting them up.

I also second the 58mm tb being too big unless you get serious head work done.

My 3:73 rip, the best gears are 2,3,4th. Best invertment if you ask me. I had my proffessionally installed. Cost me 439.00 with everything.

You are in California? I would go with a mild cam, emission compliant short headers, and have the heads ported and polished. Get a 2800 stall, a decent computer tune and some drag radials and see what happens. Ultimately you will want a 12 bolt and I would save money for that rather than invest in a weak rear that will break on you. Decent tires are extremely important, I can't begin to count the number of races I have won because the guy in the other lane forgot the basics and couldn't hook up.

Yes Im in california. But I could care less about emmisions. Actually I will do all I can to make it not emissions legal. Dont worry about that I have it taken care of.

My Plans with my car are

Comp Cam @ .050 [224* 230*] [ .503/.510]
Port Heads to match cam
Port Intake and Get a TB (If neccessary)
Get 3.73 Gears
3200 Stall Verter
Hooker Lt's Long tubes/ X-pipe (No cats)
Full Forged Engine Rebuild
Computer Tuning

I currently have 285 Toyo Proxes T1-S Tires
I am not actually going to the track, I just want a fast *** street car but Id like to know in my mind that I have a 12 second car. I just want a fast street car. Will this punch the ticket?
