315 on 9.5 rim

I was just wondering if anyone had a picture of a 315 tire mounted on a 9.5" rim. I am considering putting a 315 nitto 555r on a set of 9.5" zr1s. I have searched the topic and cant find a picture, but plenty of good information.

I did a lot of research prior to installing 315s on my
car and talked to BF Goodrich and Goodyear tech
people. The minimum rim width they recommended
for a 315 is 10".

I had a buddy who had 315s on his 9.5" wide Z06 wheels, and it looked pretty good without any rubbing issues.

Well when I first got my rims and took them to the tire shop to get them put on they put my 315s on my 9.5s and it did look killer. But they realized what they done once they tried to put the 11in rim up front. I had to wait another hr but it was funny.
It look killer and I see no problems with it and you wont rub.

And I GUARANTEE you that you do not want to do that. What are you expecting to gain? more tire patch contact. Nope not going to happen. If you want 315s, do it the right and safe way and put them on 11 inch wide wheels. Eugenio_SS who is a mod on LS1.com said one of his friends did this very same thing, run 315s on his stock 9.5 inch wheels.
On either a road coarse or regular spirited driving, the damn tires CAME OFF the wheels. This was caused by the fact that that size tire is NOT recommended for a 9.5 inch wheel.

You will actually have a smaller contact patch with a 315 on a 9.5" rim than a 275 on a 9.5" rim. This is because the 315 will either bow in or out depending on the pressure in the tire, but the tire will never be flat all the way across because the rim is too narrow.

Just don't let Fred (Injuneer) see this post. He can write a one page essay on why not to do it. I have seen it.

A BFG 275/40/17 kdw is only about a 1/2 less in width than my 315/35/17 Nitto Drags Radials. They should fit and work ok, but they may wear funny b/c of the rim width.

I dont recomend it, but i dont think there are any safety issues with doing so.

Nitto tires aren't wide anyway, a 315 looks like a 275 BFG, I run sumitomo 315 for 2 years now on a 9.5 AFS and looks perfect on that rim !! Some people are just **** !!!

Hey that's cool. We will be **** and be safe at the same time. Why doesn't anyone who believes it isn't a problem PM injuneer and see what he thinks on the topic.

i had my ride set up that way for a while. 315s on 9.5 zr1 wheel. it looked good to me for like 3 weeks . i got sick of it and put em on 11 inch wide zr1s looked much better. then i had a blowout on my 315s so i went out and bought 335/35/17s to put on my 11 inch zr1s. man 20 mm makes a big diff cause the 335 fits perfect. and with the off set i got on the wheels . it tucks in very nice. wheels dont poke out.

I honestly dont know of any stock 9.5 rims.

I have Nitto 315/35/17 on my Enkei's and they fit great and look great. They bulge out slightly wider than the lip of the wheel.

While the section width on the Nitto 555R and RII is narrower than many other tires of the same size, they still need their minimum approved rim width to achieve proper contact patch. Do not mistake section width as being directly related to the minimum rim width as many different variables affect this (tire design, belt number and material, compound, etc). Also, the specs quoted for tires are all based on the measured rim width, if you decrease this rim width you will change the section width, which can cause a deformity in the contact patch. The standard figure is that for every .5" change away from the measured rim width, you will change section width by 2/10". So a 315/35 measured on an 11" rim will loose .6" of section width by mounting it on a 9.5" rim.

If you just have to try doing this, make sure you get a tire that is specced for a minimum rim width of 10" as there are many 315s that are specced for a minimum width of 10.5" rim.

Why doesn't everyone quit riding the jock-straps of the mods and speak from your own experience. "He said this..." "she said that..." sound like a bunch of damn women who read a tire sizing poster in Big10.

Speaking from my own experience I can only make statements about the 315 Nittos. I ran 315 nittos for almost 2 years on 17x9.5 wheels and never had any problem... they looked fine. I got 17x11's with 315 Dunlop's... then switched those to Nittos. True... the nitto is a little smaller, not really noticable and definately doesn't look like a 275 BFG. Also, my traction did not change at all from the 9.5 to the 11.

The Nitto is not going to wear funny as long as you keep your finger out of your *** and check the wear. If you notice wear in the middle... drop the pressure. You can do that with DR's.

One of my best friends has been running 315 Nittos on 17x9.5's on a 10 second Supra for about 4 years now. Only problem with traction is too much boost.

i have been reading alot on this subject in the last couple of days, and it seems to be a pretty popular opinoin that the nitto 555r is not a "true" 315, and in reality it is more like a 275. My original plans were to get a 275 nitto drag, but after hearing what most people have said, it sounded to me like i should get a 315, and have heard about alot of people who have succesfully put them on a 9.5" rim. Does anyone have a picture, of a 315 nitto on a 9.5" rim. If there is the chance of the tire coming off the rim, i certainly dont want to be doing something like this. thanks for all the replies guys, but i would still like to see a pictre.
