383 startup problem!
#16
After about 60-90 seconds of the drill going there was zero oil pressure. The drill was spinning like there was nothing attached to it?!? Yes I'm sure I had the primer seated on the shaft, then out of the blue boom drill twisted in my hand! Now I'm getting 60+psi on a mechanical gauge with the drill. What just went on? It was like the oil pump wasnt even turning then boom it caught. I dont want to throw the intake back on untill I'm 100% sure everything is right. I had someone crank it over while I was priming it and it kept pressure.
Maybe all the oil drained out of the pump and it had trouble priming itself if the drill wasn't turning fast enough to create suction. Did you put on your own pickup tube? Maybe that is leaky - and did you torque or tighten the bolts on the oil pump cover and the oil pump mounting stud? Did you use Locktite on it? Just a few things on the check list.

I didnt locktite the pump to the main, but I did loctite the bolt on pickup to the pump. I guess it's possible the car just had a hard time priming itself, it did sit for a little more then a month after I primed it with no oil in the pan. I'm going to hit it with the drill again in the AM and if I get instant pressure I'll throw the intake back on. What a way to start my 1st 383 yikes!!! At least now I have a angle drill adapter from harbor freight and can prime future motors right before I throw the intakes on them.
