383 stroker

383 stroker
I'm trying to find a good 383 stroker kit to replace the stock bottom end, I'll be doing some 1/4 racing and some road course at willow springs, dont know exactly what to expect price wise but what are the power gains, and is there any way to pass smog with that set up? future plans after the stroker kit will be porting / polishing heads and a better cam, and not to much later a pro charger set up.

there u go, i would call summit and give them the part #, and ask them if that will work for the newer lt1 motors... GenII
Says some thing about for a 2 peice rear main seal.. give em a call, they will tell ya for sure.

Shortblock wise, an LT1 is an SBC, 86 and newer, only thing you have to make sure is that it is a 1piece rear main seal.
You wont see much in the power gain area until you do the heads, a 383 will be really choked up without some really good flowing heads.
A 355 might actually be better in your case, if you are going to be revving at a pretty high rpm on a consistant basis while road racing, something with a little shorter stroke will likely be easier on the engine in the long run, you can make almost as much power with a 355 as a 383, just not as much torque, but HP will take over if you are revving high. If you want to think of it in the sense, very raw meaning, torque gets you moving, and hp keeps you moving.
Be sure to talk with an engine builder before you order the parts, most of summit tech will be quite knowledgable, but you want to make sure what you are getting is right for you, ie if a summit tech doesnt know what an LT1 is and he sets you up with a rod/piston combo that gives you 9:1 compression thinking its a carbed car, you wont be happy.

You might want to give Scat a call. They are local (in Torrance) and make some good stroker kits. The stroker won't give you much more horsepower but low end torque show be improved a noticable amount. If you are going to put a supercharger on it later then you will have to go with a lower compression so be sure to mention this to Scat or whoever you talk to so they can recommend the proper pistons for you.
