Re: 94 Z28 mystery problem! HELP!!
I'm going to throw this out and say its possible the overfueling by having the mismatch of injector to tune may have wiped out your cat and or o2 sensors and or plugs. Did your oil smell of gas? If so that can lead to greater problems than those listed above. This is why we were so insistant on getting tune to match injectors as it created a terrible spiral of potential proplems. Scanning for codes and monitering data and checking fuel pressure all would be helpful at this point. An exhaust shop may be a big help in determining if cat is shot as I know very little about them. I would say it might be dangerous to drive if getting that hot so hopefully others with more knowledge can suggest some things.

Re: 94 Z28 mystery problem! HELP!!
Thank you slick,
The cat was removed before I bought the car. There is no catalytic converter.
Yes the oil was full of gas. With the new oil I have 60# oil psi. There was no metal shavings in the old oil.
The PCM is set for 24s and now there are Bosch III 24s in the car.
I've checked the plugs and they black but cleaned up easily and were not fouled.
An exhaust shop will not help as there is no cat. I'll check fuel psi and scan for codes next.

Re: 94 Z28 mystery problem! HELP!!
You posted the tune questionaire and it shows next to "remove cat" the entry "highflow". Clarify. There are too many contradictions in your posts like:
Did you send the PCM to them for a new tune at some point?
Could be running extremely lean, hence the red exhaust manifolds. The manifolds should NEVER glow red. A plugged cat could cause this, and that's why I went back and looked at the questionaire.
How did you verify the PCM is set for 24#/HR injectors? Via the "stock" entry in the questionaire?
Have you ever checked fuel pressure?
You need to run a data log using Scan94/95 (free download link in a "sticky" on the "Computer Diagnostics......" forum, plus info on the required cable). Upload the data log to an FTP site, and we can take a look at it. What is hard to understand is why there are no codes set in the PCM that was running an engine with injectors about 2X what the PCM was tuned for. There had to be codes present.
PCMforless said the tune they did to it would handle 47s so i figured 36s would be better.
PCM is tuned for 24# injector per PCMforless

Re: 94 Z28 mystery problem! HELP!!
March 2012 I bought the car for $1200 from a friend in at George. They told me that the engine had been rebuild in 2009 by the previous owner. They parked it after one year because of transmission grinding in reverse and first gear. It wasn't running so good. I drove the car home, pulled the transmission and rebuilt it. While waiting for parts, I replace the opti with an aftermarket from auto zone and replace the pump, belts hoses, oil, antifreeze, brake fluid and lube the entire chassi, etc. I finished the transmission and installed it. The engine then was running rich and horrible. Took the car to Steven Wade Chevrolet in St George Ut. Where they did a scan and found no codes, replaced the ICM, check fuel pressure, compression, and fried the disturbutor. I took the car home got a new disturbutor and replace it and return the car to Steven wade. They had the car over two months and could not find anything wrong. I moved to North Utah and a mechanic friend of mind, who now is dead, believed it needed another rebuild. Engine was pulled and disassembled. The block, crank, intake and heads were taken to Clegg automotive in Orem Utah. There they polish honed cleaned all surfaces needed and checked all tolerances. They rebuild the heads with parts I supplied that was purchase from comp cam, ie LS1 springs, 1.52 roller rockers, and preexisting valves. I retrieved the engine components and reassembled using parts purchased from summit Racing. Part list include Molhe ring, clevite bearings, double roller timing chain/gear. Cam, rockers and springs was purchased from Comp Cams, and installed in using existing lifters. Engine was fully assembled and installed into car August 2013. Mated with t56 controlled with with a McLeod clutch. Aug 31, 2013 drove the car for the first time. Although we had to push start it due to a bad starter motor, it ran fantastic. Had power, response and amazing sound. Sept 1 I went to Idaho for two month to work, my girlfriend had the starter motor changed, then trailered the car to Premier Automotive(Premier Performance) of West Jordan Utah. There they ran codes, nothing came up they replace injector clips, map sensor connector , welded the exhaust, change the opti, sent the PCM to be flashed. They received the PCM back from PCMforless. At that point they told me there was no vacuum and then they discovered the 47# injectors. It was after that the problem with the clutch happen and I paid the bill and towed the car home. I replace the clutch fork, and started my investigation. This was the beginning of nov 2013.
In the middle of Nov I found this site and posted my first question. It was then I got the engine running and notice the manifold glowing for the first time. Engine continue to run worse. Dec we swapped to a different stock computer with no change then went back to original. Jan thru April I replace spark plug wires, cleaned mass air flow, swap out map sensor, replace idle air valve, swap tps, and installed 36 lb injectors, change the coil with no improvement. Received from Bryan herter about my tune and posted the info here. On April 24, 2014 spoke to Keith Wenzel on the phone he informed me the computer was tuned for 24lb injector. April 25 my wife bought Bosch III 24's. Yesterday afternoon they arrived and I installed them last night.
I have checked almost every sensor, all vacuum hoses for leaks, intake manifold for leaks and everything I can think of to find the problem. It seems like the longer it runs the worse it runs. Acceleration sux.
The above is as inclusive as I can remember but I reserved the right to omit some details unintentionally.
The 47's were discovered AFTER reflash. The cat was removed prior to me purchasing the car. The oil and filter has been changed and the new 24's been installed. The exhaust manifold glow as they did in nov.
There is NO cat. it was removed BEFORE i bought the car
Any other questions please ask.

Re: 94 Z28 mystery problem! HELP!!
I purchased the cords from ebay but they wont be delivered till June 10. Did finally get the program. I havent re verified the fuel pressure since installing a new pump in July 2013 even though Premier checked it in Oct and said it was fine.
Have not sent for a retune
programmed injectors were verified by phone with the programmer (Kieth Wenzel) on April 24.

What happened to the car after the starter was replaced. You said you had to push start it,(on Aug 31) but it ran "fantastic". There is a disconnect in the timeline. What happened in the 2 months you were gone for work? If in fact it ran fine, why would you have it trailered to premier performance? And "they ran codes, nothing came up they replace injector clips, map sensor connector , welded the exhaust, change the opti, sent the PCM to be flash. They received the PCM back from PCM for less. Why would they do any of those things to a car that runs "fantastic"

That's cool, we can help ya. At the top of the page under your screen name click on "Private Messages" and on the left of that screen is "Edit
signature". Click on that and list your '94 Z28, and list it's features, mods, etc. and it'll appear @ the bottom of your posts...like ya see @ the bottom of mine & lotsa members on here. A datalog is what you record while your engine is running, being driven, while makin' a pass @ the drag strip, etc. Injuneer pointed ya to the app to download in post #34 above. It's a free diagnostic tool ya use to hook your computer to the OBD1 port under your dash to see what's up in the PCM, as well as what it's doin'. You gotta have the cable you're waitin' on but in the meantime go ahead & download the app. Then things will get rollin' in a hurry as far as helpin' ya out.

Re: 94 Z28 mystery problem! HELP!!
Ok awesome, after we replaced the starter the car would not start. It would spin, using the starter, but would not fire. I asked her to take it there because they have a dyno in house and I thought once they got it to start they could check hp and tune it. Their claim was that they coul "tune" it on the dyno. Later, too late, I learned that that was BS. Once they got the car they went through it and "found" the missing clips, bad opti, bad connector etc. I asked them to tune the PCM because of the new cam and their claim to be able to do it in their shop (remember I'm new to this. Didn't know any better).
It was about late sept that the car was taken here. I was confused as to why it started while being pushed but not with the starter. They claimed bad opti.
I downloaded the program last night. Just waiting on the cords.

Re: 94 Z28 mystery problem! HELP!!
Appears it was running great, but Premier found a lot of problems (oversize injectors, bad Opti???), and that after Premier changed the Opti, the glowing manifolds showed up. That could indicated that they failed to index the Opti splined drive shaft correctly to the cam sprocket, which could throw the ignition timing off and cause the glowing manifolds.
Has the Opti been changed since Premier changed it?

Re: 94 Z28 mystery problem! HELP!!
I don't believe the opti was bad but they insisted it was. Can the shaft be put in wrong? From what I've seen it can't be and they claim to have taken it apart after installation and double checked only to find it was installed correctly. However that just what they said. What your saying makes sence tho. No it has not been changed since.

Re: 94 Z28 mystery problem! HELP!!
I can tell you with absolute certainty the splined shaft can be installed in the wrong position. Based on asking the question:
"Are you sure you indexed the splined shaft correctly?"
.........over the 15+ years I (and LT1 gurus like Shoebox) have been asking that question on this site (and other LT1 oriented sites), and getting the answer:
"I'm sure I did it right"
...........only to have them backtrack and report:
"I checked it and it was wrong"
..... I have come to the conclusion that at least 10% of the splined shaft Opti installs go bad because the splined shaft was not indexed correctly.
