Unhappy 97 z28 auto trans

A couple days ago I was going to start my 97 z28 and after I started it it immediately went into reverse. After looking at my gear shifter, I realized it said it was in park. As I went through all the gears, shifting each time didn't give the resistance it usually did and every gear offered no change as it went in reverse in every single one (P, R, N, OD, D, 2, 1) the cars turns off when I put the shifter in park but it still goes in reverse. Can someone tell me what the problem is? Is it a shifter cable problem? 4l60e tranny btw

Loose or broken shifter cable.

Is that an easy fix? Can I do it myself?

You'll have to get under the car and assess what is going on when an assistant operates the shifter. Make sure the wheels are blocked and car can't move.

Re: 97 z28 auto trans

I had a similar problem during my engine/tranny install last year. It was in gear when I cranked and it was due to a bad shifter cable. The tranny had gotten hung up on the cable when I pulled the engine/tranny out the bottom and damaged the cable, but didn't know it was damaged until the reinstall. I bought a new one for around $50 and it wasn't too bad to install. You'll have to remove the center console.
