ABS Inop light and Low traction light problems

1. My ’95 TA has started some hair-raising habits over the last week or so. At irregular periods, the ‘ABS Inop’ light comes ‘On’ and stays ‘On’ when the car is started. On other occasions, it comes ‘On’ during normal operation (driving, braking, whatever, I haven’t noticed any real pattern). Therefore, I started the habit of turning the key ‘Off’ and ‘On’ again to re-enable the ABS. Not a permanent fix I know, but I am a full time student and my bank account reflects that fact.
2. Mixed within these ‘ABS Inop’ periods are times where as I brake to a normal everyday stop my ‘Low Traction’ light comes on and the brake peddle becomes very hard to push down. The first couple of times this occurred, I thought I had lost all braking. The road conditions have been near ideal for traction and there is no real ‘Low Traction’ condition. When this occurs however, it does feel as if the car had hit a patch of black ice, as it seems to slide perfectly. Subsequent occurrences have led me to believe that the Braking and/or Low Traction systems (if there is such an animal) were simply removing braking power based on a perceived ‘Low Traction’ condition.

Car condition:
-LT1, M6, bone stock as far as I know
-115k + miles (it has been autox’d a couple times by me but I just bought the car too. 5000 miles or so ago)
-50 miles/wk average use
-Brake Pads have life left
-Recently replaced brake fluid

What could be causing this behavior?

thx for the help

I had a similar problem, but it turned out there is an abs connector (a few actually) near the air filter. I assume when I would take it in to get the oil change the dude would get a hurry when checking the air filter and knock one of the connectors slightly loose. So I pulled out the connectors, cleaned them with some electrical connection cleaner and firmly reconnected them. I never had the problem again until the next time I got the oil changed. Then I repeated the process. I actually don't think I needed the cleaner, but I had it sitting around. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with mine. I added a few drops of brake fluid and it never happened again. I'm not sure why, but it worked!

I had the EXACT same problem with my '95. It turned out to be the wheel speed sensors on the front wheels. I replaced one and then like 2 weeks later the other went out. I would do yourself a favor and do both at the same time.

If you have traction control could be your rear abs sensors.

.
