was the system left open? those compressors are sensitive to moisture
if it was sealed you will neeed to get it vacced to remove any moisture buildup and also to check for leaks. you can charge it yourself but be sure you know how to do it serious injury can occur from improper charging. i have seen when i was in school pictures of peoples hands blown off by the canister from charging on the high side. make sure to fill on the low pressure side. should have 250-275 psi on high side, 35-40 on low side...i would invest in the guages if you are going to do this i have my own and i make bucu bucks with them

The above comments are right on. If there was any pressure in the system at all there shouldn't be any problems. If there is air in it, I'd replace the dryer bag before having it pumped down and leak tested. I know some people who even pump out the freon and replace the dryer bag every few years as part of their general maintenance program.

The AC system was open, so I won't do it by myself. How much do dryer bags cost. Expansion valve is around $45, kind of expensive, but do I really need it. What kind equipment is needed for vaccuming. Probably just shops can do it.

you can make a vaccum out of an old refrig compressor but the fitting needed is a pateneted item so it is not available to buy the only way to get one is to get one off of an torn up vac...but to vac is about 25 bucks that is what i charge anyways....and the drier is around 70 bucks and yes i would get a new valve i do this all the time trust me
