Accel Opti, those that have it!
Hey guys,
Well I posted "MSD Opti, those that have it" post about 2 weeks ago and it seems that some ppl. are having problems with them. A) with the timing alignment, and b) wiht the rotor falling appart/grinding on the cap/opti body itself. Problem is, I NEED an opti.
So here is the same quesiton for ppl. that have the Accel Units and have been running them:
A) how many miles now and any problems?
B) did you take them appart and inspect when you got them?
c) how high do you rev your car? Daily driving?
Thanks a lot guys, I need a quick decission on this subject. I'm willing to pay for the MSD, but not if it fails. I just don't have time for that, and, it seems to be too new.

I frequent several LT1 boards and have yet to hear of one on a car.
My vote is a stock base with a quality cap and rotor. I am trying the MDS cap and rotor and with 4K miles they are holding up fine. Wont catch me saying they are the greatest ever seeing as before this I had 96k troublefree miles on one and this base had 70K troublefree miles on it and a stock cap and rotor when I changed those just because it was oof for the heads and cam.
The opti is NOWHERE near as bad as those on these boards make them out to be. They neglect things and then blame the part, a distributor cap and rotor will wear PERIOD given the cost and hassle of replacement on the LT1 they do not get replaced at tuneup time like say an HEI would have, that is the only reason why they appear so troublesome.

I got the MSD opti, it has been working good (100 miles now), and works great up top/no miss, but not sure if my cam timing screw is adjusted properly.
Let us know (anyone) if you go with the accel unit!

Just saw the post..
I have an accel opti and it is AWESOME. I compared a stock new opti with the accel unit before installing it, and the quality was impressive. The internals felt like they were just simply put together better than the stockers. I sometimes daily drive my car, but mostly drive it on the weekends and here and there, and when I get on it, I rev it out to 6800 or so and it has never skipped a beat yet. It has been on the car now for 4 months and probably 2000miles, without any problems at all. My buddy is actually installing them on customer cars at his shop now, and not really even messing with the stock delco units unless the customer specifically asks for it. Hes been having GREAT luck with them as well.
I highly reccomend the Accel unit, especially at $100 or so cheaper than the Delco units.
Good luck with the MSD though.. Hope it lasts.

I have one. I've had it about 3000-4000 miles. As I wrote in another thread, I was caught in a flash flood where I most definately submerged the opti and 10 minutes later, after the wires dried out the car started back up fine, not even a hiccup.
I daily drive my car... it never sees above 6000rpms. For the $199 I paid for the opti, I cant complain one bit.
edit - I did not take mine apart to inspect before isntalling it. If you do a search though, I did post a thread with pics of the opti once it arrived.

Well hopefully our MSD junk lasts. I paid $420 for my MSD. I dunno if it was worth it for the money.
The accel so far sounds like a good unit!

I would have considered the Accell, but I did not want a bronze bushing in place of a ball bearing which the stock unit has (on my 95, anyway) So in the end, I used a MSD cap & Rotor and my stock base unit, which still looked perfect inside and had very little play in the shaft.

The bushing doesn't strike me as that bad a handicap. After all, the cam shaft and hence the opti turn at 1/2 the rpms of the crankshaft which isn't terribly fast, considring. I might gamble on this one when the time comes.

when i replace mine it will be with the accell. but for now i'm just going to clean up the opti-crap and install my new LTCC setup...once i find wires that fit the stock ls1 coils
