Adjust rockers using TDC method or let the car run?
Hey fellas,
Will adjusting the rockers with the engine running after a cam install have any adverse affects (I know a little oil will be slung everywhere) or would adjusting the rockers using the TDC be the better way.
Does it really matter? I just want my rockers to be adjusted correctly.
Thanks,
Tim

Either way is fine.If you haven't learned the "feel"of the pushrod to find zero, running would be better(except for the mess). You will have to get them somewhat close to crank it.Do put the valve cover on the side you are not adjusting.
Back off each one until it tap's pull it down until it barely quit's tapping then a quarter turn. The car may shake or run rough for a minute until the lifter relieves itself, thats OK.After it smoothes out go to the next one---same thing 16 times.
Install covers,gunk engine,and clean up floor--Been there.

In all reality you need to do the TDC anyway so you can fire the car. I would just leave the valve covers off and readjust while running as well. Thats what i do. Allow the engine to warm up. What lifters? If comp r's, be sure to tighten right at zero lash. If not comp r's, 1/4-1/2 turn is the usual.

Definitely use the TDC method if you took the valvetrain apart.....I just destroyed 14 of my pushrods immediately following the valve spring change by thinking the pushrods were tight enough and fired it up, then every rocker came off and proceeded to bend my rods

I did it the TDC way.. I was thinking about doing it with the engine running, but I've never done it that way before. So it just seemed I had too many uncertainties about it. Plus I didn't feel like cleaning up the oil
