Alt issues

Since im running taller valve covers i had to grind the alt. When hook up the wires to the alt the car drops in idle or dies, but with out them the car holds a nice steady idle but of course wont charge. could grinding the case just a little cause this???? It still passes tests down at all the parts stores in town. Im confused.

Re: Alt issues

Got the problem narrowed down to the plug that goes into the alt. Not the power wire the only other wire. when i hook it up the car wont hold idle but it will charge when it is unhooked i get to idle but no charge. There is a small black wire that also runs down by the starter that i dont know what it goes to. i switch over to an lt4 starter and if i hook it to acc it wont crank where does it go? almost ready to go put it on dyno and see what it puts down.

Thanks

Chris

Re: Alt issues

that small black wire is a ground, it is supposed to go to the block near the starter

Re: Alt issues

I have a 97. I had a some what similiar problem where the single wire connection post came loose inside the alt. It was causing a short in the electric system ever time I connected the red wire to the single nut post. Fixed it easy enough but the problem taking the Alt apart is that the brushes are going to pop out of their holders. You'll need some ingenuity with a pin to keep the brushes in place when you reassemble the Alt and pull the pin.
