alternator not charging

I have a new battery. Shows 12v but the alternator does not kick in and charge it. The connector that has 1 wire in it going to alternator, where does this go to from the alternator? Is there suppose to be a voltage going through it? Its redish and I checked it but have nothing going through it. The alternator is brand new also.

Thanks for any help,
Howard

You should have a large red wire that carries the voltage from the alt to the battery.. and you ahould also have a connector that has a small Brown or red wire, thats the field genorator signal that activated the alt to charge the system. I am not sure but I belive that it;s goingto be a ground signal from the PCM, I don;pt ahve a diagram in front of the to be sure tho.. see if it;s a ground, make sure the main red wire is hot..

The small wire is the exciter wire, it will have 12volts on it.
Take the alternator off the car and have it tested. Chances are that alternator is bad.
