Any way to check opti out of the car?

I bought this car running rough. It would crank forever pop and backfire. Finally when it would start it would idle rough, like it had a miss. I tried to drive it to get the codes run but about 2 miles from the house it started cutting out bad, so I turned around. I don't know what I was expecting to find but I just started pulling it apart. The only thing out of the ordinary was that the coil output pole was really oxidized and corroded. The car was supposed to have a new coil and opti on it but the coil doesn't look new. The opti looks to be a re manufactured unit. Any ideas to diagnose at this point would help.

Even after it started to misfire and you took it home, you didn't pull the codes? There are codes that don't turn on the SES light, including the code for loss of low resolution pulse from the optical cam position sensor in the Opti.

Yeah I was going to my friends shop to read the codes. I don't have a code reader. It has been a while since I have had a car with a computer. I thought maybe it would be like my big blocks and have obvious damage or corrosion at the site of the problem. I do have a laptop. are there any cheap code readers/edit programs out there? (for next time) For now I think I will replace the coil just because I have it off and it looks bad. Should I replace the Opti too or just put it back together and see what happens? Also I was hoping to find two plug wires switched or something.

yep you'll need the correct aldl cable for your car, and there is some free software to monitor and scan codes.. there is also free tuning software available.. the main thing will be buying the cable, theyre $60

look up Freescan, its 100% free for download, monitors, pulls codes, clears codes and datalogs.

datamaster gives you 20 free scans/datalogs, plus you can hack the registry and reset it..

for programming/tuning/datalogging do a search for TunerproRT version5 beta..

Do I just need an OBD II cord? The 95 has a II connector with the I computer. Right?

AKM has the correct 16-pin cable:

Or use a 12-pin cable and jumper it per Shoebox's diagram:
