I think I will try to see if there is a rubber stopper holding it from shifting into 1st gear. If it is so, I will cut some of it.

That exactly was my first opinion. I just dont get if it was done for sound purposes...then why would the 3.23 cars be any quieter in first.

Bottom line is, they blocked first gear with 2.73s and that, as they say, is that.

Hey guys! It's me, Neil, the guy who started this post..
I went outside and used a kitchen serated knife and fixed the 1st gear blocker. It cuts right off easily. Shifting into 1st is no problem now. COOL!!
I went to town after I cut it off to try shifting from 1st and go to WalMart. Saw 3 rice cars but couldn't get any of the 3 to jump on me...oh, well.

..
so do this to remove the rubber/plastic blocker...\
1.insert ignition key and turn to on, but not crank position
2.press foot on brake pedal and pull shifter back to (D) position
3. Lift front of shifter console carefully up and turn it sideways so you can see under it at the rear portion of the shifter assembly.
4. Look at right side of notched gear plate. You will see a black block of plastic/rubber that hits the shifter when you pull it back to 2nd gear.
5. push shifter up to (P) position
6. Take a small saw or serated knife and start at the front of the block and trim it off as even as you can to make a flush surface against the notched gear selection plate. reinstall console piece and shift it into 1st.
7. Go drive it!
wa la!!!!!!!!!!
