The smart thing is to have a daily driver and then the project car.

I know what you mean. My camaro is the daily driver in the summer but in the winter I'm lucky enough to get my moms '99 c280 benz. Call me crazy but I absolutely hate that thing. Rides good but to me there is no replacement for Hp and torque.

And I have the misfortune of having to decide which vehicle to drive/ride each day

Mod away.. there's nothing rare about the car that will make it more valuable in the future.

It would be cool to have a cobalt SS as a daily driver...

The best thing to do would be have your dad or grandfather (who ever was the tech) put it on a scanner and log a few minutes of driving and see what is screwing up.

I dought it is the transmission as they start slipping at the top of the gears not at the bottom.

I am thinking a good tune up is order and you will be fine

Are you sure its not just a normal hesitation from slamming the gas down? I remember when my car was stock, if I was driving normally and decided just to punch it, for a second or two it would "charge up" almost, then go with no problems. I added a CAI, LT headers and a Loudmouth exhaust and it never happened again.
