Average time and cost to swap a motor
I'm only talking labor. I can buy a rebuilt engine from Colina Engines for 1,700 but I'm curious about the cost to pay somebody to swap it. I could do it myself but in all honesty I'd rather pay somebody who has done it before and could get it done quick.
Beautiful thing about being in the ARMY is your around a bunch of good dudes that came from many different backgrounds. I have a good friend who was a ford mechanic for ten years and now he's a helicopter mechanic like myself. Trying to figure out what would be fair to pay him to swap the engines for me.

That's something that could easily be done in a day or two if the person doing it knows what they are doing and have the proper tools/techniques. I've swapped out an LT1 motor with another motor (ready to go, i.e. needing no parts off of the original motor) in 6 hours with lunch inbetween. Chances are though not many mechanics have that much specialized experience with LT1s, so I would plan on a few days.

Yeah I figured I'd pay him around a grand. He has all the tools at his house and we have access to a shop. He's not a chevy mechanic but he knows his stuff and I'm sure he'd figure it out plus there are plenty of write ups online.
Curious....How much was your 383 rebuild ? They have forged motors from Clayton Engines on ebay for 3,000. That's using all scat. For the compstar setup with 4 bolt mains it's 3,400....Add LE3 Heads or in your case AI for around 2. I know there's a lot more but that's the bulk of it.

All in all though, out the door, with the proper bolt-ons, tuning, transmission, gears, and supplemental mods it was around $10k.
It's for sale, too.

Re: Average time and cost to swap a motor
time per alldata is 20 hours for short block including transfer of parts and adds for recharging a/c and if the vehicle has TC. also close to 20 doing a long block. our shop rate at my dealership is $90 per hour. so 1000 would be a good deal. Also Joe i am the servie director for an auto dealer. If ure knocking out motor swaps in 6 hours and ever in need of employment....u r hired! its warmer here in Okla
