Backfire at idle....

I did a search and wasnt satisfied with results so Im going this route...

Just finished putting the motor back in and go to fire it... It fires up and was really choppy...then after about 10 seconds it started popping VERY LOUD out of the exhaust... I shut it down immediately...

I then checked for any open vacuum ports there was none....

The opti was never taken off the motor when it was out nor were the heads or intake... though the rocker arms are new.... not roller (long story, lol) maybe they are over tightened? Plugs are new, wires are not... a couple are a little burnt, but worked fine when I put it up for the winter?

Thanks for any help... if you need anymore info ill be checking religously heh

Thanks, Joel

so, you pulled the motor? to do what? just change the rockers? what else did you do to it while it was out? you should have changed the wires while it was out... maybe you left off the EGR or something. i could maybe come take a look at it, im in flint. anyway, good luck.

EDIT: you say this at idle, how does it run at other RPMs?

Re: Backfire at idle....

I pulled the motor out because when I got the car the engine bay was terrible like most of the paint was stripped... I didnt want to take it up in the rpms so i didnt try..

Did ya get any plug wires crossed? That would do it.

^^^ Yep, check the plug wires to make sure they are correct. When I installed my LT's, we crossed 6&8 and had the same exact symptom you have.

Re: Backfire at idle....

I double checked the plug wires last night and they are where they are suppost today... I felt like **** all day today, still do but i may go back out to troubleshoot in a few...

Im thinking I might have an exhaust valve hanging open a little due to a rocker too tight... im gonna relash and go from there..
