Re: BAD engine shaking!!

@97WS6pilot, I've had the 4l60e replaced twice with the stock flexplate, and had problems with the compressor clutch. I fixed the compressor an while ago when it let go, but it had made horrible grinding noise and the shake was not as bad.

The harmonic damper was the first thing I looked at. It's a 5" diameter underdrive unit and I can't find another in any catalog. It's brushed aluminum in color, mounts to the stock 3 bolt yolk, and may be part of a kit, as the alternator pulley looks small too. The bolts on it were too big to go through the Advance universal puller.

I'll just ask santa for a scan tool. I need one too often not to have it in the toolbox.

Re: BAD engine shaking!!

its almost always one of three things;

Compression
does it have good compression in all cylinders?

Ignition
all wires firing(signal),
plugs firing(spark),

Fuel
injectors firing,
Good fuel pressure,

But if its not it could get really expensive,
Im not sure exactly what size the balancer should be but id check it for cracks or missing rubber,

Id try this first--->>>as far as the accys go you can take the belt off and see if it still makes the same vibration.(that would narrow it down alot if it goes away)

besides that you could even have some carbon buildup on a piston causing pre-ignition(does it knock?)

I know most of this you probably already checked but I am just tryin to brain storm lol

Re: BAD engine shaking!!

Is the damper an actual integrated damper/pulley, or did someone pull the damper off and incorrectly replace it with a simple underdrive pulley, that was meant to be sandwiched between the stock damper and the hub?

Re: BAD engine shaking!!

yeah thats the same thing that happened to mine the guy who put my motor together put the underdrive pulley on there and didnt put the harmonic balancer on top of it and that motor shook like a stripper tryin to make the rent... i put the balancer back on and everything went back to normal my throttle response wasnt as good but at least the motor wasnt shakin anymore.

Re: BAD engine shaking!!

It shouldn't shake all that much without the damper, because its not a "balancer". But its definitely not good for the crankshaft to run without the torsional dampening effect of the damper. It could be contributing to the problem.
