bad timing/exploding starters?
The Z had sat a few months in the driveway due to a bad battery, yesturday i finally got around to putting a new battery in and took it to my friends shop to put my winter tires on.
The car started fine after putting in the battery, let it warm up for about 20 minutes(-30ish outside) then drove it to the shop easy since i didnt have winter tires, it ran just fine.
We changed the tires and did nothing else but check the fluids.
Tried to start the car to go home and it wouldnt start, it would turn over about once then make a racket and stop, tried a few more times then it started but ran real rough and eventually died. Tried starting it again and it made even more noise then what clearly sounded like the starter being destroyed. so i left it there and towed to a garge this morning.
They put on a new starter and flywheel started it, test drove it, and tried to start it again..........
talked to the mechanic and he said it was a bit slow to turnover after putting the starter/flywheel on and ran rough on the test drive. when they tried to start it again back at the garage the new starter basicaly exploded.
So now they have no idea whats wrong other than expecting a timing problem. they are friends of mine there so they arent really charging me for labour and cant take the time to check the entire motor to find the problem, and dont want to wreck another starter.
So my question for you folks is what would cause such a problem that would kill starters or throw off the timing(or whatever) that bad?....please if you have any input i would appreciate it
