Re: Best Motor Oil and oil filter??

For tranny (mine is auto) I use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, and for the rear diff. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic 75W90, as well as Mobil 1 5W30 for the engine...but that's just me.

Sorry, I know that I am asking alot of questions, but just want to make sure I get the best products for the tune-up!
I like NGK plugs, and Taylor over the valve cover wires. If you didn't want the over the valve cover wires, MSD's wires are excellent as well. Magnacore is also a good selection, but is a little more expensive. Autometer is a very reputable company (I have several of their gages). As far as brands for other fluids, the tranny as long as it is a correct type (Dexron 3 or 4), I don't think it really matters. I am not sure on the brake fluid or the rear, but I have heard that Ford's makes an excellent rear end fluid or something like that.

Re: Best Motor Oil and oil filter??

IMO Royal purple is the best. Now, at the same time, if you onle drive it easy a mile or two a day, I can't say that it would be in your best interest to switch to Royal Purple. My Formula in my Sig is my daily driver, and it just gets Valvoline durablend. Also, if you go with synthetic with anything more than 75k on your motor, you will probably encounter some leaks since the oil is synthetic and your seals aren't what they used to be.

Re: Best Motor Oil and oil filter??

I see a lot of people recommending the Mobil 1 oil filter. I have used those a couple of times, but now I just refuse to pay $10-$11 for an oil filter.

I prefer Castrol GTX 10w30 for conventional oil, or Mobil 1 0w40 for synthetic, and an AC Delco filter (the taller one with more oil capacity I believe it's a full size truck filter).

Royal Purple and Redline are marketing companies. They have another company make the oil for them. FWIW the motors I have torn down that have run that stuff look like *** compared to M1.

NEVER NEVER NEVER should you switch from Synthetic to Dino oil unless you want the motor to wear out faster. Just put M1 in there and if you need more oil pressure switch to a thicker oil. ie from 5W-30 to 10W-30.

Re: Best Motor Oil and oil filter??

As previosly stated, Royal Purple and Mobil one are pretty much the best. Mobil one filters are pricey, but the way I see it, I would rather spend an extra $5 on a filter, than go with something that won't filter as well (Fram for example).

As for my money pit (383, 95 Z), lets just say I have more than just go fast parts on it. And as you can guess with my preference for the best(and probably most expensive) oil filter, money was not spared when buying the best parts available either. I have over $16,000 just in my motor alone. BTW, I am about ready to drop another $8,000 when I go to pick it up from the shop this week. (Just changed pistons, and custom cam, and had motor spec'd out and balanced with new seals ect. + D1SC, custom intercooler, ect, ect, blah blah blah.

Re: Best Motor Oil and oil filter??

oil has been covered already, but ill throw my .02 in on the filter. I only use WIX in my car, and i use an oversized one. Pretty much the best filter you can buy for like 7 bucks.

Royal Purple if you can afford it. I would suggest a K&N filter from a 1988 chevy silverado. It allows you to hold about 1 more quart than normal.

Do it!

Other than that if you have a big oil pan like a Canton I agree that the truck oil filters are the way to go.

Re: Best Motor Oil and oil filter??

My choice is Mobil 1 5W-30 with a K&N Filter. I've used a variety of oil. Those two combinations have been my favorite. I'm interested in the new TruFilter Jeg's has advertised. It's really pricey. Not sure about that one. I'll just have to wait and see.
