I reasently did it out the top & I would say definitly bottom if you have a lift or a safe way of getting it up that high. Taking out the bottom you can leave a lot of crap on the engine which saves time. Taking it out the top was time consuming but not hard, with the right help.

This has sparked a new question to my mind. Should I even bother taking the engine out to do a heads/cam?

How to you line everything back up (after dropping it out the bottom) when it's time to go back in?

3 bolts on each side of the k-member and the 4 on the trans cross member are all that is holding it in place, aside from the shock mounts. More than 1 person and those 'wheel creeper' things under the tires make it really easy to line up. The shock towers come into contact with the frame first when you raise the engine up into the car, once those are bolted back up its a matter of 'nudgeing' the k-member where it needs to be to line the holes up for the frame mounts.

I must be the only one who'd rather drop the motor out to do heads/cam than bruise/cut myself up trying to work in the engine bay.

if you have practice w/ pulling the engine I don't think it's a bad idea either. If it's your 1st time, leave it in!

Re: Best way to pull an LT1 from an F-Body.

Just ordered a VERY nice Eagle lift for my shop last week, pulling the motor from the bottom I would think would be a lot easier, its really going to be easy now, undo everything and lift the car in the air leaving it on the ground.
Simple enough.
O, I would rather just pull the dang motor to do Heads cam, just throw it on and engine stand and it would be Very easy, JMO.
