i like the cc306...
lots of people have opinions about it, but i say you can't argue with numbers. lots of people make 350rwhp on that cam and correct boltons with stock heads...guys also make 12.60 passes on that cam on street tires with stock heads :-)
some people say old technology, i say proven power maker...just my .02

thats the nice part about custom cams. shelf cams are typically not designed for stock heads...at least not one that big. Bauer can make you a cam that will work exceptionally well with stock heads, but have a lot of potential with ported heads. for instance, i had him make me a cam for stock heads. it's a little over .600" lift and duration of 230/236 @.050". it made 363rwhp and 355rwtq as listed in my sig. thats what the target range was for stock heads. my heads are a little better than stock, so with some adjustments, i shouldn't have a problem getting 380rwhp and bringing the torque up to match. bret also claims i could make about 420rwhp on le2 or similar heads, so the cam is not limited.
I understand you want to make more power than that, but thats just my example, and for the extra 50 bucks, a custom grind is the best way to go.

i agree with streetrod in that the cc306 is a good cam....but with the custom grind i got from BRE, i can get peak power about the same or a tad more than a cc306, while making much more torque in the low end and mid range, plus its more "daily driver friendly". not to get too far off track with your concerns, but just another attempt at trying to get you to get a custom grind

im with blackztpi onthis one. I also went with a custom grind from Bret Bauer, and Im running it on stock untouched heads. it's essentially an LE2 cam, but Bret said it should still work pretty well on stock heads. I was planning to stay cam only and Bret suggested the LE2, just go with a bigger stall/gear combo. The extra $50-100 you might spend on a custom grind be it from Bret, Joe O. or any other guys with a good rep will be worth it in the end. Id hate to go with an off the shelf, then swap it out when you get the heads back. that's not to say that the xe503, cc306 or any other shelf cam wont make power with ported heads. it just leaves a lot on the table over a custom grind that can improve driveablitly and net you some more power. in the end if your happy with the result, then that's all that counts.

Since you are in Texas, remember that a "big" cam will bust you on emissions. A custom grind may get you more HP that will pass the sniff.

i live in texas and passed with mods in sig.

i have a cc306 and love it, but the 503's put down the same times with better drivability. maybe not the peak hp but from what have seen same times so i would go cc503

Emissions are not a factor.

How is a mail order tune with a custom grind? I would think a cc306 would be easier to tune since it is common cam in this community. I think it will be the cc306 or cc503 for my choice. Unless Bret can steer me his way.

You say you want a nasty cam adn your on a budget. If you have a stock stall converter your gonna need a higher one. Have you figured that in your budget? There's nothing worse than a big cam with a stock stall converter.

Mail order tunes are hit and miss.

Bret can grind you a cam to match your needs. but if he grindes you a cam for the ported heads you will have eventually, who knows how it will run now.

306 is not going to be as good as the 503 on the street I don't think....I have one, my friend ran the 503 and he was about a tenth slower than me on stock heads

the 503 is good across the board, the 306 is a good cam but my friend had a better running car all around, mine just ate fuel and ran fast...it got to a point where I just stopped driving it. his was i little more user friendly and I know he made more tq than me

let me clarify, i have no "shutter" from the cam. (can't remember if thats what its called) ion hit the tune dead on and it runs great. but the cc306 is a very high reving cam. in my car it is set to shift at 6350 and it pulls harder and harder till then. it would be best if i was shifting at 6700 but the bottom end is stock. the power band is 3100-6450 on mine, but with a cc503 it would bump it down. because of this you will have more torque down low were you use it on a daily basis instead of wot. thus it would be funner to drive in town. also somthing you need to take into consideration is the springs, rockers, lifters, pushrods, bearings, elect. water pump, vented opti conversion, timing chain. and STALL CONVERTER! you will need a stall with the cc306 and DO NOT GET A STOCK RESTALL. i have a 3000 stock restall and it only stalls to 1700.

also somthing you need to think about, i am getting 13mpg in town and 18 on the highway. i've seen as low as 10 in town. i am now only driving it about 120 miles a week instead of 350. and driving my g-body, (82 monte carlo) with the Flowmasters and 305. it gets 16 in town and 18 on the highway.

Thats basically identical fuel economy to what I get with my 503
