Bleeding cooling system

I was just wondering on my LT1 should you open the bleed screws with the engine off or with it running. I recently had a coolent flush and like a week later got an air pocket. I cracked each screw with the car on and it went away and the temp came back down. Should i be bleeding with the car off or on???
