There is no such thing as "BEST". It is all a matter of opinion. However based I what I know from members of this board, HOOKERS, MAC'S, FLP'S, AS&M and SLP's are all good. From those YOU need to factor in which ones you want based on: looks, price, functionality, installation, reliability, and size. Good Luck

What works best on the 96 SS (LT1)? Seems like I hear more about the SLP headers more than any other, but it seems like people who have been making headers for decades would have the better product.

I hear plug access is terrible on them. Also their customer support sucks. Like they all said....longtubes or shorties????
You have to decide.

Has there been any issues with either shorties or long tubes, i.e. installation, long term effects to any other part of the car, etc.

eldebrocks are a bitch to change plugs on and shorties arnt really worth it in my opionion. save up a couple hundred extra and get some hooker long tubes with some jet hot. Hooker from my experience are the best buy and provide good power and sound. If you have the money go FLP. shorties are ok, i guess better than nothing but longtubes are the ****! they will give you more torque and are eaisier to install, and change plugs.
