Broke a spark plug in half....

I broke one of my spark plugs in half and the other half is still threaded in to the hole. My auto teacher told me I have to have the head pulled for $600 and I wanted to know if there was a faster/cheaper way to do it

Thanks guys

Re: Broke a spark plug in half....

well if it broke at the start of the threads right after the hex head you have to pull the head.

Alright, do you think $600 sounds like a good price? He's a real good mechanic

I've had luck with an easy-out and a torch to heat the piece

I thought about that but won't you probably knock the rest of the porcelain into the cylinder.

I've seen the porcelain broken before, but never between the hex/threads...are you sure a socket won't still grab it?

is the porcelian piece still in the piece, I had that happen once, I was able to get it out, all the other times it stayed with the piece that came off

Re: Broke a spark plug in half....

Yes it would be free if I did it myself, but I need to have transportation when my parents leave for vacation on wednesday of next week, and he said he would have it fixed by then.

The spark plug basically ends where the hex is, there are no threads attached to it. I'll take a pic later

Re: Broke a spark plug in half....

That sucks...if you can get a dremel on it, you might be able to grind a slot and then use a flat blade tip on a ratchet. <shrug>

Re: Broke a spark plug in half....

Wouldn't that get metal shavings in the combustion chamber though?

Re: Broke a spark plug in half....

If it broke then the Plug is probably seized in the threads. Sounnds like you will need to get the head pulled.

And when you put the new plugs in make sure you use some anit-sieze compound.

If you can get the porcelain to come out the i'd say jam an ez out in there and pray it takes it out.

If the plug is still in the hole, you'd only be grinding a shallow slot in the end of it. Perhaps a picture would help, I might not be envisioning it correctly. Were you tightening it when it snapped? The ones I've seen broken were due to slipping off it.
