building 383 need help!
my engine is off at the machine shop getting rebuilt, ive decided to do a 383 and want to know what i should do..
i was thinking the cam i should use is the cc503. is this a good choice?
car will be a daily driver, i have about $3,000 for the build, maybe more. im leaving the heads alone for right now just because i dont have the money for it.
i was thinking 383, cc503, hardened pushrods, not sure on rockers i have 1.52 comp cam rockers right now, will that be okay? new lifters, should i get a bigger tb? tell me what you would do, please i have to tell the guy what i want by monday, and its friday right now.. and input is appreciated!

Build a 355. Ur gonna spend 1/3 of that too machine the block. Bore it 30 over use a federal mogul rebuild kit speed pro pistons. I love my xfi 280 cam but i have head work,1.6 rr and the beat of everything in my heads. If your building a 383 up ur budget too almost 3x what u have and do it right. Or just buy a shortblock from Golen engine service and call it a day.

Honestly i don't think you'll build either for 3k but especially not the 383. Block has too be clearenced and new crank will cost u half your budget. Reuse rods and crank. Have the crank ground and polished, rods resized. If u wanna gain power for cheap have them deck the block and mill the heads our motors can take alot of compression and 25 hp for every one point u raise the static compression. Have your machinist do a 3 angle valve job, open the throats up, clean the burring up, rough up the intake side too suspend fuel. You'd be surprised what you'll gain just from this.

A 383 with stock heads and the CC503 would be a very disappointing combination, IMO.
A stock or close-to-stock rebuild is what you should be looking for reusing as many stock parts as possible, then put the added funds into the cylinder heads and valvetrain. Displacement doesn't make horsepower - a well-matched valvetrain and good tuning does.
What are your HP/ET goals?

Re: building 383 need help!
i was originally going to do a 355, but the guy that is doing my engine is a long time family friend, and said it would only be another 800 to do a 383 balanced and all. so i figured i would just do that. is having a 383 with stock heads bad? or just not worth it? and i will eventually do heads just not at the moment. and what kind of cam would be best for this build?

Re: building 383 need help!
A 383 with stock heads and a cam would yield unimpressive results.
A 355 with ported heads/cam can yield over 400whp.
It pays dividends to wait until you have the fundage to do everything at once. Will your plan hurt? No, but having to do everything twice is less than ideal financially.

okay, 400 rwhp is my goal. how can i reach that. i need ideas on cams that will be just right for me. and ive decided to not do the 383 and just put the money tht i was going to spend on that into my heads. so 355 here i come. haha

Re: building 383 need help!
Stock crank, stock resized rods, a good budget forged piston, nothing fancy.
AI 200cc heads with a custom grind cam with all the fixings.
All the bolt-ons and a GOOD tune.
That's an easy 400whp. Most people overindulge on the rotating assembly/bottom end when it just isn't needed.
