CAI Change - K&N -> Amsoil Filter

Just thought I'd report on latest "mod" to the car Coles notes: The new massive Amsoil filter appears to have a MUCH better throttle response than my old dirty K&N (Please see details below though).

Recently I had an Oil test done. I sent it to http://www.dysonanalysis.com/ (Extremely impressed with the service and results!) I was recommended to make a few changes to the car based on the test results. One of these recommendations was to switch to an Amsoil EaA conical replacement for my car. Previously I had the K&N FIPK which had a smaller conical filter at the end.

The only Amsoil EaA conical filter that would fit the K&N kit was 2 inches longer and had a larger diameter than the K&N filter. Basically it was MUCH bigger when i recieved the package and compared them side by side. I also then realised that I had screwed up my measurements: The new filter was WAY too tall and would stick out an inch or 2 below the bottom plastic panel on the car. Looks like I was going to have to do some customizations to the car

Modifications:
- Removed the plastic sleeve that was holding the K&N down by 1 bolt completely.
- Slid on the new filter as high as it could go. It now was able to move 1 - 1.5" 's higher up on the CAI's tube!.
- Tested the fit of the platic cover. The new filter was still touching the cover, but not nearly as much now compared to before the sleeve was removed. An edge was sticking out Perhaps 1/4" - 1/2" too far.
- Got out the dremel and cut a small hole so a corner of the filter could stick out. Took a few tries to get the position and size of the hole just right (started with a small hole and adjusted it bigger and bigger till it was perfect),

Now it fits perfectly! There was only a tiny edge just barely peeking past my newly modified plastic cover. Sure beats it sticking out 1-2 inches

I also cleaned my MAF (it was basically brand new and had barely any residue on it.) as well as my positive battery terminal which was moderatly corroded . The old K&N conical filter was also pretty dirty. It's been about a year of some city driving on the old filter.

After driving the car around all weekend I have to say the first thing I noticed was a far better throttle response. This was in part a combination of the old dirty K&N previously, battery terminal cleaning and the maf cleaning - ill never know - but I swear the cars throttle response never felt so good even in the past after K&N & Maf servicing.

I also would swear I noticed a slight exhaust note change. Can't explain it, but it was very noticable when first driving the car.

As an added bonus, I never have to worry about the filter falling off now. The band clamp is now sitting in such a way that it's resting above and on the metal bracket where the K&N Tube goes in locking the filter in place, and the bottom of the new filter is just touching the plastic cover.

I did take pictures and will get some up asap

FYI, Ive noticed a few posts regarding if a CAI really works or if the K&N really does anything. When i replaced my paper filter years ago with a K&N replacement filter i did notice a slight SOTP gain. When I replaced the K&N filter with a K&N FIPK I noticed a VERY noticable SOTP gain!

Cutting the lower plastic cover...

This is all that sticks out ...

you should just put a scoop on the bottom there

so that way when you drive through a puddle you get all the water in there, not just some of it

That was my first thought. Just a suggestion, since your not using the plastic hold down piece anyway, could you cut the bottom of the FIPK and move the filter up instead of having it stick out the bottom?

That was as big as I was willing to make it :/. Fortunatly roads and draining is pretty good in the areas i drive in. I may look into sealing it up somehow.

Thanks Harvey, with the new filter it allows you to slide it up as high as you want around the K&N tube. I actually did this in a way... Check out the 4th picture, its hard to tell by the angle but the topmost edge of the filter is actually above the metal bracket.
It's actually up a few inches on the FIPK tube already and it wont get any higher because the base of the the filter is just touching the frame/bracket thing.

leave it the way it is and you will end up with this

engines dont like water, it only takes one puddle

just cut the metal tube off some so you can gut it up above the splash shield

Sorry, but that made me laugh out loud.

I looked at one of those Amsoil filters for my Jeep to replace the K&N on my K&N intake, but went with an AEM Dry Flow. I'm not sure how big that filter is, but I got the 9" AEM and I probably wouldn't have been able to get a comparably sized Amsoil installed due to the rigid frame. The AEM was rubber, fortunately. It was a really tight fit.

GD how in the hell did you not stall out before sucking that up??? I had a mishap when I was 17 and did that to a piston. I made the mistake of starting the car after it sucked water in and stalled already. Next thing you know....the motor was knock, knock, knocking on heavens door.

that was actually caused by a stuck open injector, but its the same principal
liquid + motor = bad, very bad

haha.....uhm........my filter doesn't stick out.......but i cut a hole in the splash guard........so air could get in......to be honest the roads I drive drain pretty well, and I drive slow in the rain since I totalled my old Formula in the rain....
Is that really bad?

As a Florida resident, I can tell you that water gets in there even without holes cut in the "splash guard". There are slots on the rear face of the air box anyways. Who knows, the hole may actually help, the water may drain out faster.

I'd be interested in the physics involved with sucking water up the huge K&N intake tube. How far up your intake tract can the motor suck the water before it totally stalls out? I would estimate that right above the filter, the round section is about 3" in diameter.

The few times that I have died in puddles, it's been due to electrical problems.

Same size that comes with the LPE CAI package only its K&N. I'm now using the same filter on my Cummins, its got a 4" intake hole.
